ITEMS OF WORK

3.1.1 General Requirements.

a. The work covered by this document consists of furnishing all equipment, materials, labor and performing all operations required for concrete repairs as directed.

b. The Contractor is required to review the project site, obtain and/or verify all measurements and project data required to perform the project work. Information shown on project plan(s) is of a graphical nature. Precise locations and actual sizes must be verified.

c. The Contractor shall review all contract documents and provide written notice to the Project Engineer and Contracting Officer of any discrepancies that are found prior to bid submission.

d. The Contractor shall submit with their bid, at least three job references where the Contractor has successfully completed similar applications/repairs.

e. All materials shall be delivered to the jobsite in their original, unopened packages, clearly labeled with the manufacturer's identification, printed instructions and batch code. Contractor shall store and condition the specified products as per the appropriate product data sheet.

f. All work shall be performed in accordance with the applicable safety and health standards, the contract, and these specifications. Adequate ventilation shall be provided and maintained at all times during use of monomeric materials and solvents. Fans used for ventilating shall be explosion proof. If necessary, respirators that filter organic fumes and mists shall be worn. All contaminated materials such as wipes, empty containers, and waste material shall be continually deposited in containers that are protected from spillage. Spillage shall be immediately and thoroughly cleaned up and disposed of in accordance with applicable regulations.

3.1.2 Repair Concrete.

a. The Contractor shall install a protective coating/lining solution to all surfaces of the pit to protect against infiltration and exfiltration. Chosen material shall be a two‐component moisture insensitive, highly adhesive, chemical resistant, 100% solids, high strength and reinforced structural‐grade epoxy. Prior to coating/liner application, the Contractor shall remove and patch roughly 200 square feet of loose, delaminated and weak concrete.

b. The Contractor shall use all means and precautions necessary to insure the safety of the occupants and protection to the existing building infrastructure (to include but not limited to the sump pump, piping, and conduit) during demolition and surface preparation operations.

c. The Contractor shall install necessary barricades and enclosure to contain particles and vapors from migrating into other areas of the building, and to protect and control construction traffic. Efforts shall be made to create a barrier that effectively prevents air-borne pollutants from moving from the work area to another adjacent area within the building. To increase the effectiveness of the barrier, physical barriers can be used, such as plastic sheeting.

d. The Contractor shall be responsible to remove all of the accumulated water from within the pit prior to proceeding with any work. Provisions will be made with “Boiler Plant” personnel to ensure water is NOT drained into the pit after work commences.

e. The Contractor shall completely remove all oil, grease, dust, curing compounds, waxes, laitance and other contaminants from all horizontal and vertical surfaces to come in contact with the material. Contractor shall prepare concrete in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations, and using acceptable mechanical means as necessary to obtain clean, sound and profiled concrete. Contractor shall prepare concrete in accordance with SSPC-SP 13/NACE No. 6 “Surface Preparation of Concrete.”

f. The Contractor shall remove all rust, corrosion, and bonded concrete from any exposed reinforcing steel. As a minimum, the steel shall be cleaned to remove all loose or poorly bonded debris that would affect bond between the repair material and reinforcing steel. To prevent flash rusting, the Contractor shall use a recommended holding primer. It is estimated that this will be required for 60 square feet of the overall repair.

g. After the concrete has been prepped and cleaned, it shall remain in a clean, dry condition until the repair has been completed. Any contamination, including oil, solvent, dirt accumulation, or foreign material shall be removed by additional cleanup.

h. Surface and material temperatures shall be kept within the requirements for the selected product during and after product application, until product is cured.

i. Placing of protective coating/lining solution shall be in the presence of the Project COR or a designated representative. Placement shall NOT begin until all preparation is complete and the COR or authorized representative has approved the conditions.

3.1.3 Replace Grating and Ladder.

a. The Contractor shall avoid creating a safety issue by having an open trench for an extended period of time. Therefore, the existing deformed bar grating shall remain intact until it can be exchanged.

b. The Contractor shall furnish and install new Heavy Duty Welded Grating in its place. Grating and associated components shall be installed in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. ii. Bearing bars and cross bars shall be continuous.

iii. Minimum clearance between grating and support shall be equal to the support angle thickness.

iv. Exposed ends of grating bearing bar shall be banded with a bar of the same depth and thickness as the main bearing bars. Contractor shall weld cut bar(s) to band bar.

v. Contractor shall provide cutouts in grating for existing conduits, pipes, and other penetrations (total of 8). Edges of cutouts shall be banded. Cutouts for circular obstructions are recommended to be at least 2 inches larger in diameter than the obstruction. It is further recommended that cutouts for all piping 4 inches or less in diameter be made in the field. Important Note: Contractor shall disconnect and re-connect piping/conduit as required to install grating. Method of re-attachment shall be approved by the Project COR or a designated representative.

vi. Contractor shall grind rough weld beads and sharp metal edges smooth.

vii. Contractor shall fabricate grating in sections, which do not exceed 100 pounds each.

viii. Contractor shall touch-up and repair hot-dipped galvanized coating disturbed during this work in accordance with ASTM A780, Practice for Repair of Damaged and Uncoated Areas of Hot-Dip Galvanized Coatings, to maintain uniform barrier and cathodic protection as well as ensure longevity.

ix. Contractor shall place grating in correct position and ensure it is plumb and level, with no trip hazards present.

x. Contractor shall secure grating in place using saddle clips or similar type of fastener to prevent movement.

xi. When finished, the Contractor shall clean paint spatter, concrete slobber, grease, oil or any other debris from exterior surface of grating.

c. The Contractor shall create a 30” x 30” hinged access hatch in the new grating system; comparable to the existing concept. Contractor shall band the two (2) unsupported edges using 1/2” x 3 ” A-36 galvanized steel flat bar. Steel shall be trimmed as required to sit flush on the perimeter angle steel.

d. To protect against galvanic corrosion from dissimilar metals, the Contractor shall apply a minimum of two coats of “Safety Yellow” paint to the existing angle support steel. Paint shall be POR15, 46304, or equivalent.

i. All paint shall be new and applied in accordance with the manufacturer’s requirements. The application shall be performed with no signs of deterioration.

ii. All surfaces shall receive a uniform coating with each layer. This is to include edges and corners. The dried coat shall be free of runs, waves, brush marks, voids, and variations in color, texture, and finish.

e. The Contractor shall carefully remove the existing metal ladder and associated hardware from the east wall of the pit, and replace it with a new FRP fiberglass composite ladder system.

i. Contractor shall install the new ladder in accordance with all of the manufacturer’s recommendations.

ii. Contractor shall make certain there is an adequate, level landing where the ladder will be installed.

iii. Contractor shall use appropriate precautions while lifting and setting the new ladder into position.

iv. Contractor shall not climb ladder in any manner until it is firmly secured at the top and bottom.

v. When fully assembled, the new ladder and accessories should have no unfilled bolt holes.
