PART 3 EXECUTION

ITEMS OF WORK

3.1.1 General Requirements.

a. The contractor is required to review the project site, and obtain and/or verify all measurements and project data/information required to perform this project work. In addition, the contractor is required to review all contract documents, and provide written notice to the Project Engineer or Contracting Officer of any discrepancies that are found.

b. The contractor shall supply all tools, materials, supplies, equipment, labor, temporary utilities and supervision necessary for complete and appropriate execution of the contract documents and requirements of this SOW. This shall include all appropriate equipment to deliver, place and install steel plates in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.

c. This SOW and any Project Drawings and Specifications do not indicate each component, device, fastener, fixture, or similar incidental item necessary for the performance of the work. The contractor shall provide, furnish, and install all necessary and appropriate components, devices, fasteners, fixtures, or similar incidental items as necessary and required to provide complete, operable, and functional system to suit the intended purpose.

d. The contractor shall take prompt corrective measures to eliminate existing and predictable hazards and to stop work when required.

3.1.2 Repair Trench Covers.

a. The contractor shall furnish and install new sections of trench covers and appurtenances required to complete work shown and specified. New plates shall be of same type and size as existing steel plates.

i. All plating used shall be without deformations (warping, cracking, etc.) and shall be subject to straightedge testing.

ii. Plate removal will be required if it is permanently deformed. Steel trench plate deformation may occur during loading, but if a steel plate is deformed without loading it shall be removed and replaced.

b. The contractor shall inspect surfaces, supports, and anchors on which trench covers are to be mounted and secured.

i. Verify supports and anchors are properly located and oriented.

ii. Verify opening locations, opening sites, and dimension tolerances are acceptable.

iii. Correct defects prior to installation of trench covers.

c. The contractor shall submit shop drawings showing plans, elevations and details of sections and connections to include type and location of fasteners.

d. The contractor shall use all means and precautions necessary to insure the safety of the occupants and protection to the cabling within the trenches during all phases of work. This shall include the use of welding blankets. Welding blankets shall be fire retardant and high-temperature resistant. Any damage to the cabling as a result of this work will be the responsibility of the contractor to correct at no cost to the Government.

e. The contractor shall avoid creating a safety issue by having an open trench for an extended period of time. Therefore, the covers shall remain in place as necessary until each section is repaired or replaced.

i. In the event the contractor chooses to take the plate(s) offsite for modification, the trench shall be covered in a manner to suitably withstand traffic from forklifts and pedestrians. Contractor shall ensure the temporary covers have an anti-slip surface and beveled edges to prevent slips, trips and falls.

f. Trench covers shall be able to bear the weight of a forklift weighing upwards of 4,400 pounds over the full span unless a greater loading is noted.

g. The contractor shall provide stiffener angles (or channel) to meet the load requirements specified above.

i. Contractor shall either notch the stiffener(s) or the cable tray divider(s) within the trench as required to provide adequate clearance. Enough space shall be provided to ensure the plates do not snag during removal operations. Important Note: If the stiffeners are notched, the contractor shall weld gussets on each side of the opening for added strength.

h. The contractor shall drill bolt holes in trench covers for installation of new fasteners to secure trench cover to frame. Contractor shall drill bolt holes larger than nominal size of bolts, unless otherwise specified. Contractor shall counter sink bolt holes.

i. In addition, the contractor shall drill lifting holes. Lifting holes shall be equidistantly spaced from each end of the plate, and no more than 1 inch in diameter.

i. To hold select plates tightly together, plates will require a 6 inch long tack weld for stability (1 location). When the steel is to be welded, a welding procedure suitable for the grade of steel and intended use is to be utilized.

i. Contractor shall also weld 3 x 2 x 3/8 inch angle steel to the underside of adjoining covers to act as a plate rest. Angle steel shall be situated so that 1-1/2 inches overhangs the edge of the plate to which it is being welded.

j. The contractor shall be responsible to ensure that the steel plates and securing systems meet the minimum specifications and are properly installed.

k. Each plate must be fully supported around the perimeter to prevent wobbling or rocking and operate with minimal noise.

l. The plates shall be secured to prevent any movement. Trench plates shall not be overlapped or stacked on top of one another. Steel plates shall be secured against displacement. Securing devices shall not extend above the wearing surface of the plate.

m. The contractor shall re-weld disjointed plate stops (minimum of 2 locations). Plate stops shall be welded and ground flush at the corners for a finished appearance.

n. Welding: All welding and thermal cutting equipment shall be so designed and manufactured, and shall be in such condition, as to enable designated personnel to follow the procedures and attain the results described in AWS D1.1/D1.1M – Structural Welding Code. Contractor shall grind rough weld beads and sharp metal edges smooth.

i. Base metal shall be sufficiently cleaned to permit welds to be made that will meet the quality required. Welds shall not be placed on surfaces that contain fins, tears, cracks, slag or other base metal defects.

ii. Loose scale, thick scale, and thick rust shall be removed from the surfaces to be welded, and from surfaces adjacent to the weld. Surfaces to be welded, and surfaces adjacent shall be cleaned to remove excessive quantities of water, oil, grease and other hydrocarbon based materials.

iii. Insofar as practicable, all welds shall be made in a sequence that will balance the applied heat of welding while the welding progresses. The procedure shall be such that minimizes distortion and shrinkage.

3.1.3 Paint Trench Covers.

a. The contractor shall clean weld spatter, grease, oil, cutting lubricant or any other debris from exterior surfaces of trench covers. All surfaces must be clean and dry. If there is any question of contaminants, use a cleaner such as a commercial degreaser or laundry detergent and a scrub brush.

b. The contractor shall remove rust and paint by sandblasting, power brushing or hand wire brushing before applying the primer coat. Plates shall be sound, dry, and free of all wax, oil, grease, and loose materials.

c. The contractor shall acid etch all bare metal plates, and then test adhesion of the primer prior to completing the process.

d. The contractor shall apply primer and paint in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations to include applying products within the specified time ranges.

e. The contractor shall apply one (1) coat of primer followed by three (3) coats of the water based non-skid polyurethane coating to achieve the recommendation for heavier traffic use. Contractor shall slowly build the thickness of the coating, and not try to attain the desired thickness in one application. Finish color shall be “black.”

f. The contractor shall ensure a non-skid surface is maintained on the plate. Plate(s) without the required skid-resistance will require removal and repair in accordance with the product literature.

g. When finished, the contractor shall re-paint the 4 inch yellow aisle line. Paint shall match existing in all respects (e.g. color, sheen, texture, etc.).

CLOSEOUT REQUIREMENTS

3.1.4 Construction and Demolition Debris

a. The Contractor shall submit copies of all Bills of Lading and Weight Slips associated with the disposal of construction and demolition (C&D) debris and/or recycled materials, under this scope of work. Submit documentation per Appendix A, “Consolidated List of Submittals”.

3.1.5 Cleanup of Work Site
