f. All materials shall be delivered to the jobsite in their original, unopened packages, clearly labeled with the manufacturer's identification, printed instructions and batch code. Contractor shall store and condition the specified products as per the appropriate product data sheet.

3.1.2 Demolition.

a. The contractor shall use all means and precautions necessary to insure the safety of the occupants and protection to the existing building during demolition and surface preparation operations.

b. The contractor shall install necessary barricades and enclosure to contain particles and vapors from migrating into other areas of the building, and to protect and control construction traffic. Respirable crystalline silica, which is very small particles at least 100 times smaller than ordinary sand you might find on beaches and playgrounds, is created during cutting, sawing, grinding, drilling, and crushing of concrete. Contractor shall comply with OSHA's Respirable Crystalline Silica standard (1923.1153) for construction, which requires employers to limit worker exposures to respirable crystalline silica and to take other steps to protect workers.

i. Efforts shall be made to create a pressure barrier that effectively prevents air-borne pollutants from moving from the work area to another adjacent area within the building. To increase the effectiveness of the barrier, physical barriers can be used, such as plastic sheeting.

c. The contractor shall avoid creating a safety issue by having an open trench for an extended period of time. Therefore, since the existing ¾ inch thick steel diamond plate covers will be removed and discarded, ¾ inch sheets of plywood shall be used to temporarily cover the trench. Plywood shall be positioned and secured in place to provide an adequate walking surface.

d. The contractor shall measure, mark and saw cut the epoxy coated concrete floor as specified from the edge of the frame on each side of the steam trench in order to eliminate the trip hazard and remove the deteriorated 2 inch by 2 inch angle steel. Contractor shall remove enough of the top portion of the existing trench walls (max of 6 inches) to insure a good structural bond between the new and old concrete.

i. The edges of the repair shall be straight, vertical and have a rough profile. Contractor shall avoid abrupt changes in depth.

e. The contractor shall completely remove all loose, delaminated and weak concrete, oil, grease, laitance and other contaminants from all horizontal and vertical surfaces to come in contact with the repair material. Contractor shall prepare concrete in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations, and using acceptable mechanical means as necessary to obtain clean, sound and rough concrete surfaces exposing coarse aggregate.

i. A Concrete Surface Profile (CSP) of 6 or greater in accordance with ICRI Technical Guideline 310.2R is recommended for the specified product. Contractor shall blow out concrete surfaces using oil free compressed air to remove all dust, debris and other contaminants.

f. The contractor shall avoid damaging embedded reinforcing and adjacent concrete. The removal methods must produce minimal microcracking (bruising) of the prepared substrate surfaces. Avoid directly striking reinforcing steel with impact tools used for concrete removal.

i. If embedded reinforcing steel or other embedded items are too close to the surface to provide the perpendicular edge cut, notify the Project COR for direction before proceeding.

g. The contractor shall dispose of runoff from wet demolition or surface preparation operations in accordance with all local ordinances. Disposal methods must avoid soil erosion, avoid undermining pavements and foundations, damage to landscaping and vegetation, and minimize water penetration through other parts of buildings.

i. Contractor shall collect and neutralize alkaline wastes and acid wastes and dispose in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.

h. When complete, all debris generated as a result of this project shall be removed from the site by the contractor.

3.1.3 Repair Steam Trench.

a. The contractor shall repair the disturbed areas using a high early strength, single component, permanent concrete repair material which provides a 25-minute working time.

b. Immediately before placing the repair material or installing formwork, the contractor shall make the repair area available for inspection by the Project COR. Acceptance of the surface preparation must be provided prior to proceeding. If the work is rejected, the contractor shall perform additional operations to the satisfaction of the Project COR.

c. Formwork: The contractor shall construct forms to sizes, shapes, lines, and dimensions to match existing adjacent surfaces and textures (to include any openings, offsets, chamfers, anchorages, inserts or other specified features). Forms shall be constructed for easy removal to minimize damage to concrete surfaces and adjacent surfaces.

i. Contractor shall apply form release coating over formwork surfaces prior to concrete placement. Form release agents shall not be applied to or come in contact with the repair area concrete substrate, trench steel or reinforcement.

ii. Contractor shall not damage repair material during removal of formwork. If damage occurs, contractor shall perform needed repair and treatment required on surfaces immediately, making sure to follow specified curing procedures.

iii. Contractor shall remove all formwork anchors embedded in existing concrete, and fill anchor holes and repair all damage to existing concrete at anchor holes.

d. The contractor shall apply an epoxy bonding agent to all surfaces to receive the repair material in lieu of presoaking. Contractor shall apply bonding agent uniformly in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.

e. The contractor shall condition and maintain all materials and surfaces that contact repair material to between 35°F and 90°F, but optimally between 55°F and 75°F whenever possible.

f. Reinforcement: All existing reinforcing steel that has lost bond with the concrete or has more than one-half of its circumference exposed shall be undercut by at least ¾ inch or two times the maximum aggregate size.

i. All reinforcement shall be rigidly secured and supported.

ii. If more than 20% of the diameter of a reinforcing bar has been deteriorated, the bar will require replacement or will need to be spliced as directed by the Project Engineer.

iii. All exposed reinforcing steel shall be free of all loose scale and rust, and other contaminants.

iv. Contractor shall drill and epoxy #4 (1/2”) galvanized rebar reinforcement a minimum of 3 inches into the trench wall with a minimum of 3 inches extending into the new pour. Rebar shall be installed in the center of the exposed face and spaced at 6 inch intervals.

v. The minimum cover over reinforcement shall be in accordance with job specifications or 2 inches, whichever is greater.

g. Concrete Placement: Substrate shall be saturated and free of standing water or bonding adhesive shall be tacky during application.

i. During mixing, the contractor shall add a “gray” colored pigment (powder form) to the concrete to achieve a finished color as close to the surrounding epoxy as possible. All color packs shall be pure, synthetic, iron oxide pigments containing no fillers that will affect the performance of the mix being tinted. Color consistency shall be maintained from one concrete color pack to another, and from batch to batch.

ii. Contractor shall provide adequate access to allow a vibrator to be inserted into repair material for consolidation. Where this is not possible, contractor shall vibrate the formwork. Contractor shall only use vibration when necessary and in a manner to avoid material segregation. Vibrators shall NOT be used to move repair material laterally.

iii. Contractor shall pour material into formwork in a manner to avoid segregation, and firmly work repair material into roughened substrate to completely fill all pores and voids. Material shall be poured continuously from one side of the repair area to the other starting at the lowest elevation. When placing in layers on large pours, each horizontal layer shall extend repair width. Placement must be continuous to prevent cold joints. Contractor shall place and consolidate material in a manner to avoid segregation.

iv. Contractor shall continue placement until repair area is completely filled.

v. Once desired level is achieved, contractor shall screed repair material and finish to desired texture.

h. When finished, the contractor shall cure and protect the repair from freezing, hydrostatic pressure and vibration as recommended by the manufacturer. For the repair material specified, the manufacturer recommends keeping the repair continuously wet for 4 to 24 hours, depending on the volume, depth and placement temperature. Wet curing shall begin as soon as material reaches final set.

i. New Framing & Covers: The contractor shall install a new load bearing frame around the perimeter of each trench. Framing shall be constructed into a “Z” using 2 inch by 2 inch by ¼ inch angle steel and ¾ inch by ¼ inch flat bar.

i. Contractor shall weld “Nelson Studs” or similar headed concrete anchors to the new angle steel framing prior to installation to ensure solid casting into new concrete. Anchors shall be 3/8 of an inch in diameter, a max of 3 inches in length, and spaced every 24 inches (center to center) along the length of the frame.

j. When installed, all of the new framing shall be square, and ready to accept the newly furnished ¾ inch thick steel floor plates.

i. Contractor shall notch the first plate during final assembly to clear the piping where it stubs up from the trench system.

k. In addition to the above, the contractor shall replace the stretch of checkered covers adjacent to the north wall (approximately 69-1/2” in overall length) and the cover in front of the pedestrian door (roughly 52” in length, but this one has a thickness of 3/16”) to keep everything uniform.

l. The contractor shall ensure the top surface of the steam trench and associated covers are level and even with the surrounding finished floor prior to completion of the job (they should NOT present a tripping hazard). Any deviations or variations in height shall be corrected by the contractor at no cost to the government.
