About this file
This is a presentation outlining the modernization requirements for the Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) at Letterkenny Army Depot (LEAD). The current ASRS infrastructure, installed in 1973 with last controls upgrade in 2006, consists of a Unit Load system with 3,366 bins and a Mini Load system with 2,112 bins, operating 24/7/365 with an average of 1,600+ daily transactions. The existing system suffers from outdated technology limitations including a 750-pound weight capacity on the Unit Load system and 500-pound limit on the Mini Load system, lack of modern analytics and asset tracking capabilities, grandfathered safety requirements that do not meet current fire codes, and communication constraints using UDP protocol and serial technology rather than modern standards.
The Army requires a full turnkey solution that includes decommissioning of the current system and complete installation and commissioning of a replacement with enhanced capabilities. Core requirements include increasing unit load weight capacity to a minimum of 2,000 pounds while maintaining current storage capacity, full compatibility with Vantage and SAP products, modern controls and Programmable Logic Controllers, robust fire detection and suppression systems meeting all applicable safety standards, paperless documentation capability, and a minimum of one year training support with a long-term sustainment and maintenance plan supporting 24 years of system life expectancy. Desired enhancements include RFID-based asset tracking, artificial intelligence integration for workload prioritization and predictive services, modernized user interface, compatibility with existing SEER warehouse management system, advanced dashboard and reporting features, and comprehensive material handling solutions incorporating new conveyors and picking systems.

Overall Critical storage location of a significant portion of LEAD’s repair assets for multiple Army programs Conducts an average of 1,600+ transactions a day Capable of 24/7/365 operation Grandfathered safety requirements (Conveyor guarding / Fire Suppression) Utilizes User Diagram Protocol (UDP) instead of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) Utilizes serial technology to communicate between workstation and ASRS Communicates to SAP (LMP) through the SEER Application
Current System: Limitations & Concerns Outdated Technology
- Original system from 1973, with the last controls upgrade in 2006. Lacks modern features like wireless barcode scanners and a seamless user interface.
Weight & Size Limitations
- Unit Load system is restricted to a 750 lbs weight capacity. The Mini Load system has significant limitations on bin sizes and a weight limit of 500 lbs.
Lack of Modern Analytics
- No capabilities for shelf-life management, asset tracking (e.g., RFID), workload prioritization, predictive services (AI), or dashboard/reporting features.
Safety & Compliance
- The current fire protection system is grandfathered and does not meet current fire code.
Physical Constraints
- Physical storage and artisan space is limited due to building support structure and the current conveyance footprint.
New System: Core Requirements Full Turnkey Solution Decommissioning and removal of the current system, followed by complete installation and commissioning of the new one.
Increased Capacity & Performance Increase unit load weight capacity to a minimum of 2,000 lbs while maintaining current storage capacity.
Need for paperless documentation solution.
Seamless Integration Must be fully compatible and interoperable with Vantage and SAP products.
Modern Hardware & Software The solution must include modern controls, diagnostics, updated data cables, and Programmable Logic Controllers. Software must be fully developed and de-bugged.
Safety & Fire Protection The design must incorporate a robust fire detection and suppression system and meet or exceed all applicable safety and occupational health standards.
Long-Term Sustainment The proposal must include a minimum of one year for training support and a long-term sustainment and maintenance plan for a system life expectancy of at least 24 years.
New System: Wish List Advanced Asset Tracking Implementation of modern asset tracking systems like RFID.
Intelligent Operations Integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for workload priorities and predictive services.
Enhanced User Interface A seamless, modern user interface for operators.
Preferable for new WMS to be compatible with SEER due to its use in other warehouses.
Management Oversight Tools Advanced dashboard and reporting features for comprehensive management oversight.
Comprehensive Material Handling A solution that covers the full range of material handling, potentially including new conveyors, picking systems, and integration with forklifts.
