20MM Cartridges
PGU-28 Semi-Armor Piercing High Explosive Incendiary
(SAPHEI):
PGU-28 (A677) projectile is machined from 15B27 steel bar stock and then hardened to improve performance against lightly armored targets. The projectile consists of two incendiary compounds, High Explosive (HE), zirconium pellet, copper rotating band, aluminum nose, and a support disk. The nose ignites the more energetic body incendiary, which in turn, initiates the Composition A4 HE.
20MM Cartridges, cont.
M56 series (HEI):
M56 (A953, A919) projectile body is manufactured from bar stock steel by screw machine process. It has relatively thin-walled casing, base plate, and aluminized Comp A-4 HEI charge. The M56A3 is assembled with the M103 or M103A1 cartridge case and, the M505A3 Point Detonating (PD) fuze to initiate the explosive charge. The M56A3 cartridge is also assembled using an M56A4 projectile body manufactured by a blank, cup, and draw process. The M56A4 projectile body has no base plate and contains an aluminized Comp A-4 HEI charge. It uses the standard M505A3 fuze.

40mm cartridges (B470 / B481):
M384 (B470/B481) This cartridge is a fixed round of ammunition consisting of a one-piece, internally embossed steel projectile body with a metal rotating band and a cartridge case assembly containing the propelling charge and percussion primer. A PD fuze is threaded into the front end of the projectile, and is enclosed with an aluminum ogive. The projectile cavity contains Composition A5 bursting charge. The projectile assembly is press-fitted into a cartridge case. The case is a hollow bichambered aluminum cylinder with an aluminum closing plug fitted into the open well of the propellant chamber in the cartridge base. The M2 propelling charge is contained in the spherical high-pressure propellant chamber. This chamber has vent holes in the top and is sealed at the bottom by the closing plug. The hollow chamber in the upper section of the case acts as a low-pressure chamber. A percussion primer is crimped into the center opening in the closing plug.

The canister filler may be either hexachloroethane-zinc (HC) or a smoke mixture in colors of green, red or yellow, The canisters are stacked within the projectile and each has a perforated central tube so that in the stack a flash tube is continuous through the contents. The front canister is cone-shaped to conform to the curvature of the projectile case. An expelling charge of black powder is contained in the nose of the projectile under the fuze cavity. The fuze cavity is fitted with a lifting ring plug for shipment and handling. A baffle plate with a central hole near the flash tube separates the expelling charge from the first smoke canister. A rotating band with a protective grommet for shipment and handling encircles the projectile near the base. The base is closed with a metal closure disk and threaded plug.
The expelling charge in Model M116B1 ( black powder) is contained in a polyethylene cup instead of m a cloth bag as in M116 (black powder), Also, the copper closure disk used in Model M116 has been replaced with a steel disk in the newer model.

The M226 (H051) grenade launcher consists of a cylindrical plastic tube which houses one M225 cartridge, and a two-piece sabot assembly (cover and holder) which contains two AN-M8 HC-filled smoke grenades. The M226 grenade launcher provides a smoke screen for concealing tactical maneuvers of a vehicle. The safety pins are removed from both grenades during assembly, therefore, the munition is armed and ready to function when it is released from the launcher tube. The aluminum-alloy cap assembly is rolled in place over a rubber gasket on the open end of the tube to hold the sabot assembly in place. The carriage containing the percussion primer is positioned in the base of the tube. A threaded plastic retainer holds the M225 cartridge in place. Two synthetic-rubber or felt pads are placed between each grenade and the sabot assembly.
A plastic spacer separates the grenades inside the sabot assembly. A synthetic-rubber seal serves as an obturator ring between the sabot assembly and the cartridge.

This M449 series (D561/D562) projectile is of the separate loading type. The fuze, propelling charge, and primer are handled and loaded separately. The projectile is provided with an eyebolt lifting plug in place of a fuze for handling. The plug must be replaced by a fuze before the projectile is loaded. The projectile contains 10 layers of grenades with six grenades in each layer with Comp A5 explosive. The grenades are contained by a base plug attached to the projectile with shear pins. An expulsion charge is contained in the nose of the projectile and separated from the grenades by a pusher plate. The metal rotating band near the base of the projectile is protected during storage and handling by a removable grommet.
