About this file
This is a technical specification document for Air Force Aircraft Tiedown Pavement Recess Design (B11-5.3.1). The specification establishes requirements for ground-level pavement construction to accommodate aircraft tiedown equipment and grounding cable attachment points.
The specification mandates that the top of static ground shall be set at pavement grade or no more than 6 millimeters (0.25 inch) below grade. A smooth, rounded-edge recess measuring 75 millimeters (3 inches) wide and not exceeding 150 millimeters (6 inches) in length must be provided in the pavement surrounding the tiedown eye for accessibility and grounding cable attachment. The design requires installation of dowel rods as indicated in aircraft technical orders or facility requirements documents, with specifications that tie dowels must be placed at 914 millimeters (3 feet) intervals from the tiedown center point when occurring 914 millimeters or farther from a single joint, or at 457 millimeters (1.5 feet) intervals when located 914 millimeters or less from adjacent joints with parallel orientation bars. The bar material shall be number 7 (0.875") non-deformed ASTM A615M steel with a minimum slab thickness of 254 millimeters (10 inches). For asphalt pavements, pier dimensions must accommodate anticipated uplift forces of 17,100 kilograms (37,700 pounds) minimum, requiring minimum pier dimensions of 1.83 meters by 1.83 meters (6 feet by 6 feet). Preexisting slabs require installation of 1-inch by 16-inch dowel rods centered at half slab depth on all four sides with specified anchor block dimensions.
