About this file

This document is a technical specification for structural steel lintels (Section 05 12 00) detailing product requirements and installation guidelines for steel lintels designated as L2. The specification describes a L2x2x1/4 angle lintel with specific design parameters for small masonry or concrete wall openings, primarily for standard man doors up to 3'-6" wide. Key requirements include fabrication from ASTM A36 structural steel, hot-dip galvanization for weather-exposed components, a 5/16" thick bottom plate continuously welded to the angle, and a minimum 6'-0" total length with 12" bearing on each side of the door opening.

The specification provides detailed instructions for shop fabrication, including cutting lintels square, shop welding to final dimensions, and galvanizing or priming after fabrication. Installation guidelines mandate installing lintels level and plumb above door openings, ensuring full bearing contact, solid grouting when used with CMU, and prohibiting load application until lintel installation and grout curing are complete. The document also emphasizes field verification, requiring confirmation of dimensions prior to fabrication and reporting any coordination issues to the engineer before installation.

SECTION 05 12 00 - STRUCTURAL STEEL FRAMING

Part 2 - Products

2.2 STEEL LINTELS

A. General:

1. Provide structural steel lintels for small masonry or concrete wall openings.

2. Fabricate lintels from ASTM A36 structural steel.

3. Steel components exposed to weather shall be hot-dip galvanized per ASTM A123.

B. Lintel Designation: L2

1. Section: L2x2x1/4 angle.

2. Application: For small wall openings such as standard man doors (up to 3'-6" width).

3. Total Length: Minimum 6'-0" length to provide 12" bearing on each side of a 3'-6" door opening.

4. Bottom Plate:

a. Provide 5/16" thick flat steel plate continuously welded to the bottom leg of angle.

b. Plate width shall match the length of the angle leg (2" nominal).

c. Bottom plate shall extend the full length of the lintel.

5. End Bearing Requirements:

a. Minimum bearing of 12" on each side.

b. Solid bearing required on concrete or fully grouted CMU.

C. Connections and Anchors:

1. All shop welding shall conform to AWS D1.1 and performed by certified welders.

2. Anchor lintels using mechanical or embedded anchors where applicable.

D. Shop Fabrication:

1. Lintels shall be cut square and shop-welded to final dimensions.

2. Galvanize or prime after fabrication as required by project specifications.

Part 3 - Execution

3.1 INSTALLATION

A. Install lintels level and plumb above man door openings as shown on structural drawings.

B. Ensure full bearing contact at both ends and solid grout if bearing on CMU.

C. Do not allow loads until lintel installation and grout cure is complete.

3.2 FIELD VERIFICATION AND ADJUSTMENTS

A. Confirm all field dimensions prior to fabrication.

B. Report any dimensional or coordination issues to the engineer prior to installation.
