About this file
This specification document details technical requirements for structural steel lintels (Section 05 12 00), specifically Lintel L1, designed to support masonry or concrete construction above wall openings. The specification prescribes a W8x24 wide flange beam with a 10'-0" clear opening and a total beam length of 12'-0", including 12" bearing overhangs at each end. Key technical requirements include:
Materials and fabrication specifications mandate using ASTM A992 Grade 50 structural steel, with 1/2" thick x 7" wide x 7" long ASTM A36 steel bearing plates at each end. Lintels shall be hot-dip galvanized when exposed to exterior or moisture-prone environments per ASTM A123. Installation requirements specify level and plumb placement, full bearing contact, grouting on masonry surfaces, and prohibiting construction loads until full bearing and grouting are completed. Welding must conform to AWS D1.1 standards and be performed by certified welders, with final placement and dimensions to be verified and confirmed prior to fabrication.

SECTION 05 12 00 - STRUCTURAL STEEL FRAMING
Part 2 - Products
2.1 STEEL LINTELS
A. General:
1. Provide structural steel lintels designed to support masonry or concrete construction above wall openings.
2. Fabricate lintels from ASTM A992 Grade 50 structural steel.
3. All steel shall be hot-dip galvanized after fabrication where exposed to exterior or moisture-prone environments, per
ASTM A123.
B. Lintel Designation: L1
1. Section: W8x24 wide flange beam.
2. Clear Opening: 10'-0".
3. Total Beam Length: 12'-0" to provide 12" bearing (overhang) at each end.
4. Bearing Plates:
a. Provide 1/2" thick x 7" wide x 7" long steel bearing plates at each end.
b. Bearing plates shall be ASTM A36 steel.
c. Plates shall be centered under the web and shop-welded to the bottom flange unless otherwise specified.
5. End Bearing Requirements:
a. Minimum required bearing is 12" on each side of the opening.
b. Lintels shall be supported on full-width, solid grouted CMU or concrete bearing surfaces.
C. Connections and Anchors:
1. Provide welds in accordance with AWS D1.1, performed by certified welders.
2. Anchor plates to surrounding masonry or concrete using mechanical anchors or embed plates as required by structural drawings.
D. Shop Fabrication:
1. Lintels shall be fabricated to a total length of 12'-0" for a 10'-0" opening.
2. Ends shall be square-cut, and all burrs removed.
3. Mill finish acceptable unless primed or galvanized finish is specified.
Part 3 - Execution
3.1 INSTALLATION
A. Install lintels level and plumb at locations indicated on structural drawings.
B. Ensure full bearing contact on both ends; grout solid if bearing on masonry.
C. Do not apply construction loads to the lintel until full bearing and grouting is completed.
3.2 FIELD VERIFICATION AND ADJUSTMENTS
A. Confirm field dimensions prior to fabrication.
B. Notify engineer of any conflicts or discrepancies prior to installation.
