About this file
This is a Questions and Answers (Q&A) document clarifying specifications and requirements for a federal construction contract to install a new 125 kW diesel generator with automatic transfer switch (ATS) at Building 70.
The project requires installation of a standby generator system sized at 125 kW/156 kVA at 208Y/120V, three-phase, four-wire configuration, with a 1200-amp automatic transfer switch to replace an existing manual transfer switch. The generator shall be equipped with a Level 1 sound attenuation enclosure producing 70-89 dBA at 23 feet, a UL142-certified 250-gallon double-wall sub-base fuel tank with venting, and outdoor-rated PVC-coated rigid galvanized steel conduit. The period of performance is 180 calendar days total: 15 days for submittals, 135 days for procurement, and 30 days for installation and testing. The ATS shall feature a 1200-amp service-entrance-rated main breaker with adjustable or reduced trip setting, a 3-pole configuration with solid neutral, manual bypass/override capability on a standard automatic transfer switch, and shall be mounted in the same location as the existing manual transfer switch. Generator feeder conductors shall consist of two sets of four 350 kcmil copper conductors (revised from the original four sets of 500 kcmil). Load bank testing shall be conducted at 25% load for 15 minutes, 50% for 15 minutes, 75% for 30 minutes, and 100% for 30 minutes, with the contractor responsible for providing the load bank and test report. Concrete pads for both equipment shall be 6 inches minimum thickness with 4000 PSI strength at 28 days, reinforced with #5 rebar at 12-inch on-center grid spacing, doweled for anchorage, and maintain an 8-inch perimeter to the specified sub-base tank size. The maximum allowable outage duration is 72 hours, with permitted work hours from 0800 to 1630 daily, requiring advance notification to building operators.

34. Generator Feeder Sizing & Breaker Compatibility
a. Issue: The SOW currently calls for a 125kW, 208/120V, 3-phase, 4-wire generator to be paired with (4) sets of 4-500kcmil Copper (CU) feeders. This configuration yields a 1,520A capacity. However, a 125kW generator at this voltage outputs roughly 434A, and standard manufacturer units are equipped with a 600A breaker. A 600A breaker mechanical lug typically only accepts up to (2) parallel conductors.
b. Question: Are the 4 sets of 500kcmil CU feeders an oversight in the SOW? We recommend modifying the feeder schedule to (2) sets of 4-350kcmil CU, which safely supports the 600A breaker capacity and physically fits the generator’s termination lugs. Please confirm if this alternative is acceptable.
The recommendation of 2 sets of 4-350kcmil is acceptable
