About this file

This is a Diffused Aeration System Modeling Program document prepared by Tideflex Technologies for Hydro Controls, detailing the design specifications for coarse bubble mixing and oxygen aeration systems for Sludge Storage Tanks No. 2 and No. 3 at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport's Wastewater Treatment Plant. The modeling document, dated June 27, 2025 (Revision 1), provides comprehensive engineering calculations and design parameters for upgrading from fine bubble to coarse bubble diffuser systems. The project involves two circular tanks with 113-foot diameters and 14.95-foot depths, each with a liquid volume capacity of 1,121,475 gallons. The design specifies TFA-3.00 coarse bubble diffusers with a total required airflow of 7,600 cubic feet per minute distributed across two blowers operating at 3,800 CFM each. The system is engineered to deliver an Actual Oxygen Requirement (AOR) of 5,664 pounds per day based on an aerobic digestion process for sludge with 4.0 percent solids concentration and a recommended oxygen uptake rate of 12.62 milligrams per liter per hour.

The modeling calculations account for site-specific conditions including the facility's elevation of 840 feet above mean sea level, wastewater temperature of 68 degrees Fahrenheit, and atmospheric pressure of 14.26 psia. The coarse bubble system design specifies blower requirements of 209 brake horsepower per blower with discharge pressures of 7.05 pounds per square inch gauge and adjusted airflow of 4,261 actual cubic feet per minute per blower at site conditions. The design incorporates Type 304 stainless steel distribution piping with 14-inch nominal diameter drop pipes, 8-inch and 6-inch manifold sections, and 0.5-inch diameter diffuser orifices. Headloss calculations throughout the system total 195.87 inches, including hydrostatic pressure of 176.40 inches, drop pipe losses of 1.21 inches, and combined diffuser body and orifice losses of 9.0 inches. The oxygen transfer efficiency is projected at 24.8 percent of the Standard Oxygen Transfer Rate under the specific process conditions, with velocity gradient mixing design calculations confirming adequate mixing for the 12.13 percent efficiency target in the coarse bubble system.

COARSE BUBBLE DIFFUSER SYSTEM

DESIGN FOR MIXING & O2

*Note: Headloss associated to top side, field routed air supply piping, valves and blower fittings must be added to determine total system operating pressure and ICFM rate at blower.

The calculations shown on this page are for the purpose of estimating the diffuser system operating head at the top of the drop pipe and also estimating the airflow requirement after adjusting for site elevation, relative humidity, inlet air temperature, and estimated blower operating efficiency. Actual blower performance may differ after the specific blower efficency is applied along with additional head requirements associated to the blower unit, inter-connecting piping and inline valves.
