PRO-TECT TURF™

Resilient Playground Surfacing

Presented by:

T.J. Janca Construction, Inc.

Exclusive Distributors and Installers of Pro-Tect Turf™

Pro-Tect Turf™ PLAYGROUND SURFACING

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Pro-Tect Turf™ is composed of high grade, granulated rubber and elastomeric resins. These components combine to form a remarkably durable surface that will stretch and contract slightly with temperature changes and minor substrate movement. It is designed to reduce injury caused by falls, by transferring the impact to the softer shock absorbing cushion. Pro-Tect Turf™ reduces the impact of a falling child from 2 feet to 11 feet, yet is firm enough to support wheelchair access.

Pro-Tect Turf™ is a two-layer system. The first layer is a shock pad consisting of 100%

California recycled raw shredded rubber buffings. The buffings are bound by aromatic urethane and troweled into place. Thickness of shock pad is based on ASTM F1292-04, "Standard

Specification for Impact Attenuation of Surface Systems Under and Around Playground

Equipment.” The second layer or wear surface is applied over the shock pad and consists of

EPDM or TPV colored rubber granules. Pro-Tect Turf™ is suited for installation over hard surfaces such as asphalt, concrete, wood, tile, or brick. It can also be installed over compacted aggregate or sand. Pro-Tect Turf™ is mixed on site and hand-troweled to the substrate to create a beautiful, seamless rubber surface.

Shock Pad – Base Mat

Pro-Tect Turf™ shock absorbing properties are adjusted by the thickness of the shock pad.

Maximum fall heights of the play equipment will determine the thickness of the required shock pad.

Wear Surface

Pro-Tect Turf™ wear surface of typically 3/8” – 5/8” thick is designed and installed to meet or exceed guidelines as set by the Consumer Project Safety Commission and the Americans With

Disabilities Act (ADA). Pro-Tect Turf™ demonstrates good to exceptional non-skid characteristics, depending on the troweling methods used.

INSTALLATION

Substrate

Substrate to receive Pro-Tect Turf™ should be clean asphalt, concrete, wood, tile, brick or compacted sand or aggregate. Substrate to have proper drainage. The proper drainage is defined by the architect or engineer that designed the playground.

Install forming and/or screeds as required. Upon request, T.J. Janca Construction, Inc. can provide pricing and installation of all substrates, key-ways, curbing, compaction, grading and substrate drainage.

Shock Pad

Mechanically mix the recycled rubber buffings and the urethane resin to the specified resin-to-rubber weight ratios until all rubber particles are 100% covered with resin. Chunk rubber may be part of the mix ratio. Place, screed, and hand trowel mixture to the required thickness (1” to

4.5”). Allow between 6 and 18 hours for curing time. Curing time will vary depending on thickness, temperature, and humidity.

NOTE: Pro-Tect Turf™ uses 100% California recycled tires.

Mechanically mix EPDM or TPV granules and the urethane resin to the specified resin-to-rubber ratios until all rubber granules are 100% covered with resin.

Prime shock pad before placing wear surface to insure proper bonding. Place, screed and hand trowel wear surface to the specified thickness (3/8” to 5/8”). Curing time is 12 to 24 hours, depending on weather conditions.

Primer to be applied to all solid substrates and on wear surface edges where splices or color changes occur.

Clean-Up

Upon completion of work, remove all tools, equipment, excess material and debris from site.

Protection

Erect barricades and caution tape as required to prevent inadvertent pedestrian traffic on the finished surface for ±24 hours.

Certain chemicals may cause damage to the playground surface and should be avoided:

disinfectants, concentrated chlorine bleach, gasoline, diesel fuel, oils, acids and organic solvents.

A yellowish/amber shading of the top surface will be noticeable when using standard aromatic polyurethane binder to encapsulate some colors of EPDM/TPV granules. This is an industry wide design issue.

Color

Pro-Tect Turf™ is available in basic black, green, beige, red, blue, and a rainbow of colors including teal, purple, gold, brown, orange, and yellow. We can also customize colors to meet your specific project requirements.

Maintenance

Pro-Tect Turf™ should be kept free of foreign objects, including dirt, sand, rocks, leaves, etc.

Pro-Tect Turf™ can be blown free of surface debris, vacuumed, hosed off or cleaned with soap, water, and a mild bristle brush.

To maintain proper function and wear, the poured-in-place surfacing requires a regular maintenance program of cleaning to remove dirt, sand, and debris. A regular maintenance program also includes periodic roll coats with Aromatic/Aliphatic Urethane to protect surfaces and remove damaging dirt or other substances.

Urethane’s Effect on Color

A yellowish or amber shading of the top surface will be noticeable when using standard aromatic polyurethane binder to encapsulate some colors of EPDM/TPV granules. This occurs after exposure to ultraviolet rays. The shading will lessen over time and use. Alternatively, aliphatic urethane binder will remain clear.

Aliphatic, a special-order urethane, binder substantially increases the unit price.

Aliphatic urethane binder is not required with the base shock pad. To maintain a desired result, it is advisable to use aliphatic binder with certain colors or color combinations. The yellowish shading is imperceptible with most colors.

The purpose of using aliphatic binder is for aesthetic reasons, to enhance the color and/or designs in the wear course. There is no benefit in using aliphatic binder with the unexposed base shock pad.

PART III - EXECUTION

3.01 Inspection

Prior to installation of Pro-Tect Turf™ Poured-In-Place System installer will verify that finished elevations of adjacent areas are as indicated on the drawings, that the appropriate sub-grade elevation has been established for the particular safety surface to be installed, and that the subsurface has been installed in a true, even plane, and sloped to drain as indicated in drawings.

Tolerance of concrete or bituminous subsurface shall be within 1/8 inch (3.0

mm) in 10 feet (3050 mm). Tolerance of aggregate subsurface shall be within 3/8 inch (10 mm) in 10 ft. (3050 mm). Verify that aggregate subsurface has been fully compacted to 90 percent.

If safety surfacing is to be installed, verify that concrete subsurface have cured and that all concrete curing compounds and other deleterious substances that might adversely affect adhesion have been removed. Surface shall be clean and dry.

Proper drainage is critical to the longevity of the surfacing system. Inadequate drainage will cause premature breakdown of the poured system in affected areas; and void the warranty.

Verify that sub-surfacing drainage has been installed to provide positive drainage.

3.02 INSTALLATION

A. Safety Surface System

Components of the safety surface system shall be mixed on site in a rotating tumbler to ensure components are thoroughly mixed and are in accordance with manufactures recommendations.

Installation of surfacing shall be seamless and completely bonded to subsurface. Material shall cover all foundations and fill around all elements penetrating the surface.

B. Substrate

Whenever practical, substrate layer of surfacing material shall be installed in one continuous pour on the same day.

When a second pour is required, fully coat the edge of the previous work with polyurethane binder to ensure 100 percent bond with new work. Apply adhesive in small quantities so that new substrate can be placed before the adhesive dries.

C. Wear Surface

Wearing surface must be of high quality, peroxide-cured, virgin EPDM rubber.

Wearing surface shall be bonded to substrate. Apply adhesive to substrate in small quantities so that wearing surface can be applied before adhesive dries.

Surface shall be hand trawled to a smooth, even finish. Except where wearing surface is composed of differing color patterns, pour shall be continuous and seamless. Where seems are required due to color change, adjacent color shall be placed as soon as possible, before initial pour has cured.

The edge of initial pour shall be coated with adhesive and wearing surface mixture shall be immediately applied.

D. Perimeter

Concrete/asphalt perimeter must be saw cut to size indicated on plans, or formed during pour, with surfacing rolled down inside void. Adhesive must be used in the void.

E. Thickness

Construction methods, such as use of measured screeds 1 1/16 inch (1.0 mm) thicker than the required surfacing depth, shall be employed to ensure that full depth of specified surfacing material is installed. Surfacing system thickness throughout the playground equipment use zone shall be as required to meet the impact attenuation requirements specified herein.

F. Clean up

Do not allow adhesive on adjacent surface. Immediately clean up spills of excess adhesive.

G. Protection

The synthetic safety surface shall be allowed to fully cure in accordance with Manufacturer's instructions. The surface shall be protected by the owner from all traffic during the curing period of 48 hours or as instructed by the manufacturer.
