About this file
This document is a detailed technical specification for storefront installations for Pinellas County Schools, specifically section 08 43 00 covering storefront system requirements. The specification outlines comprehensive technical requirements for hurricane-resistant storefront systems, including entrance doors, windows, framing, mullions, hardware, and anchorage for school facilities. The specification mandates compliance with Florida Building Code 2020, requires wind load resistance for a 155 mph wind speed, and specifies large and small missile impact resistance for storefronts within the lowest 30 feet of exterior building walls. Acceptable manufacturers include Kawneer Company, Vistawall Architectural Products, and YKK AP America.
The specification includes rigorous technical requirements for materials, including solid aluminum alloy frames with specific tensile strength, bronze duranodic anodized finish, and detailed performance standards for air infiltration, water penetration, and structural integrity. Contractors must provide comprehensive documentation, including test reports from independent laboratories, calculations signed by a Florida Registered Delegated Engineer, and warranties covering both installation (1 year) and materials/workmanship (5 years). The specification emphasizes hurricane preparedness, noting that these school storefronts may serve as public shelters during hurricanes, and therefore must meet extremely stringent structural and performance standards.

1.3 CRITERIA FOR STRUCTURAL TEST PRESSURE, AIR INFILTRATION AND WATER
PENETRATION.
A. Wind load requirements shall satisfy the more stringent of:
1) Wind forces shall be determined by the provisions of Chapter 26 of ASCE/SEI 7- 16 for components and cladding and per Florida Building Code 2020 – Building, for the nominal design 3-second gust wind speed of 155 mph for risk category III with the applicable coefficients and factors as required by ASCE/SEI 7, latest edition, and the concentrated loads that result from hurricane-generated wind-borne debris. Note: Use worst case loading between calculated wind pressures and the minimum design pressures indicated below.
2) Minimum Design Pressure:
1st Fl (including clerestory windows)
a) Interior zones = ±52.3
b) End zones = ±64.0
Note: 1) All end zones are to be within 10’ from the corner of the building.
2) The top floor shall be considered as an end zone of a multi-floor building. Multi-floor building is defined as a building which supports two or more floors above ground, i.e., 3-story and above.
3) To be accepted the assembly is to be tested at the next highest Product Performance Class CW rating for low and mid-rise institutional building.
B. For purposes of this storefront specification, the first story's floor elevation will be considered 1.5 feet above grade, the ceiling height of each story will be 9.0 feet, and the floor construction thickness will be 3.5 feet. Consider the wind load design condition to be determined at the top of the opening -- then rounding off to the next higher bracket.
C. Mullions shall be structurally selected as to Section Modulus (S) and Moment of Inertia (I) to satisfy the specified Design Pressure.
D. Submit calculations, structural properties, connection information and product information to verify that the system performance and anchorage complies with the loading criteria specified herein. All calculations of the structural elements of the storefront system and their attachment (including embedment) to the main structural frame shall be designed by, and signed and sealed by a qualified Florida Registered Delegated Engineer, whose discipline is structural engineering. The Engineer of Record shall, in all instances, review and approve documents prepared by the Delegated Engineer prior to fabrication.
E. The storefront system shall be designed and constructed to sufficiently resist the full pressurization from the wind loads prescribed above and the concentrated loads that result from hurricane-generated wind-borne debris. Storefronts within the lowest 30 feet of the exterior building walls shall be of sufficient strength to resist large missile impacts. Storefronts located above the lowest 30 feet of the exterior building walls shall be of sufficient strength to resist small missile impacts. The storefront system shall be tested using the impact test procedures specified in the “Testing Application Standard (TAS) 201” of the Florida Building Code 2020 – Test Protocols for High- Velocity Hurricane Zones. The storefront system shall also be tested using uniform static air pressure procedures specified in the “Testing Application Standard (TAS) 202” of the Florida Building Code 2020 – Test Protocols for High-Velocity Hurricane Zones.
F. The storefront system shall be tested by an approved independent testing laboratory, and bear an AAMA or WDMA or other approved label identifying the manufacturer, performance characteristics and approved product evaluation entity to indicate compliance with the requirements of the AAMA/WDMA/CSA 101/I.S.2./A440-2008.

Storefronts, as part of the building envelope’s structural integrity, depend upon the mullions and their anchorage.
Therefore, the more stringent design criteria shall be used. Many storefront manufacturers have structural engineers in their employ who understand this, though some window supply firms and their employees do not. Because some accept lesser quality, it is not necessarily safe, considering that schools are used as public shelters during hurricanes.
