Special Packaging Instruction
This is a Special Packaging Instruction (SPI) document for a turbine case component (Part Number 4040994, National Stock Number 2840-00-390-1357) issued under federal contract F 00-390-1357. The document specifies detailed packaging and preservation requirements for the item to ensure proper protection during storage and transportation.
The turbine case must be preserved using IAW MIL-STD-2073 standards with serviceable preservation method QUP 001 and unserviceable preservation method 10. Cleaning and drying must follow IAW MIL-STD-2073, and marking must comply with IAW MIL-STD-129. The item is packaged in two preservation levels: Level A (not applicable for most specifications) and Level B (utilizing ASTM-D-5118 specifications with fiberboard closure per ASTM-D-1974). The Level B container measures 28 inches long by 28 inches wide by 3 3/4 inches deep with a gross capacity of 1.795 cubic feet and gross weight of 9.8 pounds. The turbine case itself weighs 6.2 pounds and measures 25 inches by 25 inches by 2 3/4 inches. Special markings include the SPI number, reusable container instructions, and "not for outside storage" designation. The packaging configuration utilizes a bottom die-cut (27 7/8 x 27 7/8 x 1 inches), wrap (61 x 33 inches), and top pad (27 7/8 x 27 7/8 x 1/2 inches), all per ASTM-D-4727 specifications. Three revisions have been documented, with the most recent change (Revision B, dated 13190) modifying the container size and adding fiberboard supports.
