SECTION 2 – REQUIREMENTS
2.1 Door Replacement
**It is the contractor’s responsibility to take measurements of the doors and make sure the new doors fit, operate, and seal the building**
Exterior doors and frames must have seamless surface and edge finish. Remove and Replace the equipment room and E/G room doors. The following specifications and standards, of the issues currently in force, form a part of this section and are applicable as specified herein:
American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Publication A653:
– General Requirements for Steel Sheet, Zinc-Coated (Galvanized) by the Hot Dip Process
Steel Door Institute (SDI) -100:
- Recommended Specifications Standard Steel Door and Frame
A. Door: New door must be field measured before ordering and custom fabricated if needed to ensure no edge gaps between the door and frame is larger than 1/8” wide installed. The new door must be SDI-100, Grade III, Extra Heavy Duty, 1-3/4”, Model I, Full Flush Design, 16 gage cold rolled steel, galvanized in accordance with ASTM A653. The door must have polyurethane foamed-in-place or laminated core insulation, 20 psi strength, 1.8 pcf density with not more than ½” voids in any direction. The strength of bond between the core and steel face sheet must exceed the strength of the core so that delamination will not occur during operating conditions.
The top edge of the door must be flush and sealed to prevent water from entering inside the core of the door. The interior side of the top edge of the door must be reinforced with additional steel plate welded and ground smooth to the door skin metal as needed to accept mounting hardware and to spread the loads imposed from the safety chain and spring and door holder assemblies referred below. Following fabrication, the doors must receive a baked on rust inhibiting primer applied to all exposed surfaces.
B. Door Quantity: Two doors
C. Door Hardware: The following new hardware must be provided and installed for all new doors.
All metal materials used (including mounting hardware screws/bolts) must be made of stainless steel (SS) if available. If SS is not available for the item and items made of aluminum are to be used, the mounting hardware must be of rust resistant coated carbon steel (or similar aluminum as for the item):
1. Three (3) stainless steel, ball bearing type, tamper proof hinges or a continuous full length hinge of similar construction and features.
2. A stainless steel lockset capable of accepting a FAA Best Lock, 7 pin cylinder core (Best
#83K7A4A-626, or equal). The contractor will not need to supply a lock core but must notify FAA personnel to coordinate core replacement (to be done by FAA personnel) with the door replacement.
3. A safety chain and spring rated at a 200 pound pull installed on the top inside of the door and frame. The chain and spring must be such that when installed, the door will open through an angle of 90 degrees before any stretching or compression of the spring occurs.
4. A door holder/brace must be installed to the inside top of the door. The device must be designed for manual operation (normal position will be defeated – no hold open) and be capable of holding the door in the open position a minimum of 90 degrees in a fifty(50) mph wind with no damage.
5. A fixed, interlocking type exterior weatherseal must be installed along the top of the doors to seal the gap between the door and frame along that edge. This seal must be comprised of a metal piece with a continuous hook and integral seal that is attached to the door and an interlocking angle piece that is attached to the frame. (Zero International Interlocking Watershed, Series #148, Parts #25, #142 and #144, or approved equal).
6. New spring bronze, .009” minimum thickness metal weather-stripping must be installed in the hinge and strike sides of the door frame to seal those gaps. One continuous piece with no joints or gaps must be installed to the frame using countersunk screws. This item may be omitted on the hinge side if a continuous piano type hinge is used for the new doors.
7. Weather-stripping. Install adjustable and spring loaded Zero#870AA or approved equal. This item must be comprised of neoprene and stainless steel (or aluminum if SS not available).
They must be installed in continuous, straight pieces with no joints or gaps along each edge and attached to the inside of the door frame (jamb) at the top and sides and to the interior bottom of the door. They will be adjusted to meet the door such that a nearly airtight seal is formed upon closing and complete strike engagement (the bottom adjusted to close the threshold gap).
8. Sill Protection Sweeps: Install Zero #8197A (Zero International) or approved equal door bottom sill protection sweeps. This item must be comprised of neoprene and stainless steel (or aluminum, if SS not available). It must be installed so that the bottom is 3/8” lower than the top of the entrance threshold, covering that gap.
9. Install new door threshold which matching the existing threshold size.
10. Install a seal (hook strip) on the door bottom that interlocks with the new threshold. The hook strip is similar to the existing hook strip that is installed at the bottom of the existing door.
See Section 9, CRP RTRA door pictures for details.
D. Grounding: Any grounding items that are presently attached to the existing doors and frames must be removed as needed to perform the work of this contract and then reattached in a similar manner as existed (mechanically, exothermically, etc.).
E. Painting: New door paint must match existing door. Painting will include one coat of primer as required to achieve full bonding of the two subsequent coats of exterior latex finish to the substrate. Paint information must be submitted for approval and must stipulate for use on exterior metal surfaces. Painting must be completed and dry before installation of items that attach to the doors and frames.
1. Protection: All adjacent hardware and other items in place and not intended to be painted must be removed, masked, or otherwise protected before painting. Reinstall or remove protection after painting has been completed. Upon completion of painting, the Contractor must remove all paint spots, splatter, and overspray caused by his work and leave the area clean and orderly.
2. Preparation: The door frames/jambs will require all existing items that may be attached removed and then scraped and/or sanded to prepare the surface to be painted. All surfaces to be painted must then be cleaned of dirt, oil, loose rust, and other foreign substances. All signs and placards presently attached to the doors must be replaced after the paint has cured (the COR will coordinate if needed). Anything that has been directly painted or stenciled to the existing door surface must be reapplied, painted, etc. as may be necessary.
3. Application: Paint must be thoroughly stirred, strained and kept at a uniform consistency during application. Prime coat must be applied by brush or spray and subsequent finish coats may be applied by brush, roller, or spray. Paint must be applied uniformly in the proper consistency by skilled painters using appropriate methods as approved by the COR. Where approved by the COR as necessary to suit conditions of surface, temperature, weather, and method of application, the packaged paint may be thinned immediately prior to application in accordance with the manufacturer's directions, but not in excess of one pint of suitable thinner per gallon unless required for adequate spray consistency. Do not exceed manufacturer's recommendations. Paint must not be thinned unless approval for thinning is given by the COR. All coats of paint must be free from sags, wrinkles, runs, holidays, smears, dirt, and color other than those specified. Paint splatter and overspray must be removed before dry.
4. Surfaces that have been sanded, cleaned and/or otherwise prepared for painting must be first given a coat of the approved primer material immediately after such preparation has been completed when practical. Sufficient time must elapse between successive coatings to permit proper drying. This period can be modified as necessary to suit adverse weather conditions.
Follow paint manufacturer's instructions.
5. Reattachment of Grounds: Following curing of the paint and attachment of all other items for the new doors, the Contractor must reattach any grounds that may exist for the doors and frames. The COR or local representative will determine and direct whether or not the type of ground connection used requires the contact surface area to be sanded to bare metal prior to the connection being made.
