About this file
This specifications document outlines the technical requirements for a large bed compression machine that the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) seeks to procure through an Invitation for Bid (IFB) process open to all vendors registered in BidBuy. The machine is intended to replace outdated testing equipment and will be used to test plastic pipe materials for stiffness and flattening characteristics in compliance with AASHTO M252, AASHTO M294, ASTM F949, ASTM D3034, and American Water Works Association standards. The compression testing machine must be capable of constant rate-of-crosshead movement per ASTM D2412 and ASTM D695 test methods, with a compression rate of 0.50±0.02 inches (12.5±0.5 mm) per minute for product stiffness testing and segmented testing capabilities to increase head speed for flattening tests on single specimens.
The machine specifications require capability to test plastic pipe ranging from 4 to 60 inches in diameter, with loading plates of sufficient thickness to prevent bending or deformation and length exceeding specimen length. The equipment must operate on standard 120V or 220V power with a frame capacity of maximum 300 kilonewtons, crosshead speed range of 0.05 to 500 mm/min, minimum crosshead travel of 1,600 millimeters, stroke resolution of 0.001 millimeters, and load measurement accuracy of 0.5 percent of reading down to 1/1000 of load cell capacity. Machine software and computer systems, if required, shall be included as part of the procurement.

Specifications for Large bed compression machine for plastic pipe Purpose: To replace an outdated testing machine to the new building that meets material testing Stiffness and Flattening requirements for AASHTO M252, AASHTO M294, ASTM F949, ASTM D3034 and American Water Works Association PVC pipes.
General Requirements:
| Testing machine | A properly calibrated compression testing machine capable of constant rate-of-crosshead movement type meeting the requirements of Test Method ASTM D2412 and ASTM D695. |
| Machine software and computer, if required, shall be included | |
| Rate of Head Approach | Machine shall be capable of compressing pipe at a rate of 0.5±0.02 in. (12.5±0.5 mm)/min for product stiffness and capable of segmented tests to increase head speed for flattening testing on a single specimen. |
| Specimen Sizes | Machine shall be capable of testing 4-60in plastic pipe for stiffness and flattening |
| Loading plates | Thickness of plates shall be sufficient so that no bending or deformation occurs during the test. Plate length shall equal or exceed the specimen length and plate width shall not be less that the pipe contact width at maximum pipe defection plus 6 in. Plates shall be large enough to conduct stiffness and flattening for all pipe specifications listed above, including up to 60” diameter pipe |
| Power | standard 120V or 220V |
| Frame capacity | max 300 kN |
| Crosshead Speed | 0.05 to 500 mm/min |
| Crosshead travel | min 1600mm |
| Stroke Resolution | 0.001mm |
| Load Measurement Accuracy | ±0.5% of reading down to 1/1000 of load cell capacity |
