3.2.1 Wicking/Drying- Test Procedure as follows:
Specimen Preparation- Specimen samples are prepared from original and post 3 laundering- AATCC-135 (1)(IV)(A)(i). Cut specimen 6” X 1” in the warp and filling directions. The long dimension is considered the test direction. All specimens must be conditioned in a controlled atmosphere (70 F +/- 2 F, 65% humidity +/- 2%) for a minimum of 4 hours prior to testing.
Sampling- For each test lot, 12 specimens in total shall be required and defined as follows:
Initial set of 3 warp and 3 filling specimens representing side-center-side and final set of 3 warp and 3 filling specimens representing side-center-side post 3 launderings.
Procedure
1) Fill a 250 ml flask with approximately 25 ml of distilled water. Weigh the flask containing the water (= initial flask weight). All weights to be recorded to at least three decimal places out, 1/10,000th.
2) Cut conditioned specimens to 6” X 1” size. Measure and mark approximately1” from the top and ¼” from the bottom.
3) Place pin across the 1” mark so that each end of the pin is exposed and able to be hung over the top of the flask. Utilize the 1” area to mark specimen appropriately (for example: left side post laundering or center initial…).
4) Place specimen in flask containing water by allowing the pin to hang over the edges of the flask. The specimen should not be submerged into the water level higher than the ¼” mark at the bottom of the specimen.
5) Set timer for 30 minutes.
6) After 30 minutes, hold specimen by the 1” area, slightly raise specimen, and gently shake five times while still in flask in order to remove any drops of water that may be sticking to the bottom of the specimen. Remove specimen from flask.
7) Measure the length of the apparent “wet” area of the specimen.
8) Weigh the flask containing the balance of remaining water (= final flask weight).
Report- Measure the distance of the “wet” area measured post subjection to the water to the nearest 1/16th. “.
Calculate the differential mass calculation as follows:
Initial Flask Weight – Final Flask Weight X 100 = % Weight differential Initial Flask Weight
3.3. Lining. The cloth for the lining of the trunks shall be black 100% polyester circular knit crepe, micro denier or near micro denier. Antimicrobial and moisture management properties shall be inherent in the fiber. The fabric shall conform to the requirements in Table II.

3.4 Elastic. The elastic webbing for the waistband shall be 1 ¾ to 2 inch wide cotton, polyester, or a cotton/polyester blend. The weight of the webbing shall be 1.25 ounces per linear yard with a minimum thickness of 0.048 inch. The elastic webbing for the leg openings of the liner shall be black, 1/8 inch wide, weighing a minimum of 0.28 ounces per linear yard, with a minimum thickness of 0.16 inch. Both elastics shall have a maximum of 50 percent elongation when tested in accordance with ASTM-D-4964 (STANDARD TEST METHOD FOR TENSION AND ELONGATION OF ELASTIC FABRICS). The elastic shall comply with the finished measurements in Table I. Test procedure for weight shall be in accordance with ASTM-D-3776, Option C and test for thickness shall be in accordance with ASTM-D-1777 (STANDARD TEST METHOD FOR THICKNESS OF TEXTILE MATERIALS). The samples shall be conditioned as directed in ASTM-D-1776 prior to testing.
3.5. Drawcord. The drawcord shall be of a proper length to accommodate the waist and hips.
The braid for the tubular drawcord shall be cotton, polyester, or polyester/cotton in a solid or flat construction in an olive green shade and approximately 3/16 inch in diameter/width. The dyed cord shall have a minimum rating of "4" for colorfastness to light, laundering (after 3 wash and dry cycles) and crocking when tested in accordance with AATCC 16 (see paragraph 3.2.1), AATCC 61-test 3A, and AATCC 8 (COLORFASTNESS TO CROCKING: AATCC CROCKMETER METHOD) respectively, and shall have a minimum breaking strength of 75 pounds when tested in accordance with ASTM-D-5034 (FABRICS, TEXTILE (GRAB TEST), BREAKING STRENGTH AND ELONGATION OF). The specimen must be dried after each of the three laundering cycles.
The soap solution shall contain 0.5 percent by weight, P-D-245, Detergent, Laundry, and Hand Dishwashing (Granular) Type II, in water hardness not over 50 parts per million. The weight of the specimen shall be 4.0 +/- 0.5 grams and the rotating time shall be 30 minutes with ten stainless steel balls in each cylinder. The cord shall be knotted at each end.
3.6 Thread. The thread shall be cotton or spun polyester, or cotton-covered polyester, dyed to an olive green shade. The cotton thread shall be 2,3, or 4 ply, having a minimum breaking strength of 1.5 pounds. The polyester thread shall be 3 ply, having a minimum breaking strength of 2.2 pounds. The cotton-covered polyester thread shall be 2 ply or 3 ply, having a minimum breaking strength of 2.6 pounds. The tests for breaking strength shall be in accordance with
ASTM-D-2256 (YARNS BY THE SINGLE-STRAND METHOD, TENSILE PROPERTIES OF).
3.7 Labels. A commercial-type label is acceptable, provided that an additional printed cloth label containing the contractor's name, contract number, size and National Stock Number (NSN) is caught on the stitching of the commercial label. The commercial label shall include fiber and laundering information.
3.7.1. Label/tag. Each item shall be individually bar-coded with a paper tag for personal clothing items. The paper tag shall be standard bleached sulfate having a basic weight of 100 pounds. The paper used for the tags shall have a smooth finish to accept thermal transfer and direct printing. The tags shall have a hole and shall be attached to each item by a fastener, clearly legible and readable by a scanner. The bar coding element shall be a 13 digit national stock number (NSN). The bar code type shall be a medium to high code density and shall be located so that it is completely visible on the item when it is folded and/or packaged as specified and so that it causes no damage to the item.
