About this file
This is a military specification (MIL-DTL-29405B) that details requirements for wool and wool/nylon broadcloth materials used in U.S. Marine Corps dress uniforms. The specification covers three types of cloth: Type I (wool, 9.6-10.9 oz/sq yd), Type II (wool/nylon blend, 12.0-13.2 oz/sq yd), and Type III (wool, 8.0-9.0 oz/sq yd), available in two classes - Scarlet 2501 and Dark Blue 2307.
The document provides detailed physical requirements including fiber content (minimum 95% wool for Types I/III, 75% wool/25% nylon max for Type II), weave specifications (2x1 right hand twill), dimensional standards, breaking strength requirements, colorfastness parameters, and quality control measures. Materials must undergo mothproofing treatment per MIL-DTL-43665 and meet specific toxicity requirements for skin contact. The cloth is furnished in minimum 40-yard continuous lengths on rolls, with widths of 56 inches for Types I/III and 60 inches for Type II. The specification is managed by the U.S. Marine Corps Systems Command and applies to dress uniforms, insignia, stripes and piping applications.

4.5.2 In-process inspection. Inspection shall be made at any point or during any phase of the manufacturing process to assure that only approved components are used (see 3.4.1). The Government reserves the right to exclude from consideration for acceptance any material for which in-process inspection had indicated nonconformance.
4.5.3 Visual inspections.
4.5.3.1 Shade and appearance examination on individual rolls. Each swatch taken from each roll in the lot shall be evaluated against the standard sample for shade and appearance in accordance with AATCC EP9, option C
(see 3.5 and 6.5).
4.5.3.2 Yard-by-yard examination and acceptance criteria. Each roll in the sample shall be examined yard-by-yard (full width excluding selvage) on the face side only with both overhead and back lighting. The defects are as defined in MIL-STD-655 and table IV, and only defects that are clearly noticeable at normal inspection distance (3 feet) shall be scored. Each defect shall be marked with a 1- to 1½-inch long string. The string shall be sewn into the selvage near the defect. A red string shall represent a three or four point defect, and a white string shall represent a one or two point defect. The defects are assigned demerit points in accordance with MIL-STD-655, with the exceptions listed below:
a. The defects found shall be counted regardless of their proximity to each other, except where two or more defects represent a single local condition of the cloth, in which case only the more serious defect shall be counted.
b. Only coarse yarns that exceed twice the normal diameter shall be scored.
c. Mixed filling shall be scored only if attributed in shade bar resulting from wrong ply, wrong twist in the yarn, or off shade yarn.
d. The defects specified in table IV shall be scored four points for each yard in which they occur.
TABLE IV. Four-point defects.
a. Any hole, cut, tear, or abrasion mark.
b. Edge ravels when pulled outward.
c. Uneven weaving throughout.
d. Broken or missing yarn.
e. Any spot, stain, or streak more than 1 inch in combined directions.
f. Knots greater than Fabric Defect Replica Scale level C (see 2.3).
g. Slubs greater than Fabric Defect Replica Scale level D (see 2.3).
h. Area of poor dye penetration, streak, or shade bar.
i. Width not as specified within a tolerance of no less than ½ inch.
j. Objectionable odor.
k. Slack or tight selvages.
l. Any embedded foreign matter or uncleanness.
m. Edges rolled, folded, scalloped, or corded, or baggy, ridgy, or wavy cloth.
4.5.3.3 Shade variation. During the yard-by-yard examination, each roll in the sample shall be examined for shade variation defects as specified in MIL-STD-655.
4.5.3.4 Roll identification and marking examination. During the yard-by-yard examination, each roll in the sample shall be examined for roll identification and marking defects as specified in MIL-STD-655.
4.5.3.5 Length and put-up examination. For Government procurements only, during the yard-by-yard examination, each roll in the sample shall be examined for length and put-up as specified in MIL-STD-655.
4.6 Toxicity test. When required (see 6.2), an acute dermal irritation study and a skin sensitization study shall be conducted. When the results of these studies indicate the material is not a sensitizer or irritant, a Repeat Insult
Patch Test shall be performed in accordance with the Modified Draize Procedure (see Hayes’ Principles and
Methods of Toxicology). If toxicity requirement (see 3.8) can be demonstrated with historical use data on the finishing treatments used, toxicity testing may not be required (see 6.2). At a minimum, toxicity data should include results from a primary dermal irritation study in laboratory animals and a repeated insult human patch test (Modified
Draize Procedure). The latter must be conducted under the supervision of a qualified dermatologist using at least
100 free-living individuals.
5. PACKAGING
5.1 Packaging. For acquisition purposes, the packaging requirements shall be as specified in the contract or order (see 6.2). When packaging of materiel is to be performed by DoD or in-house contractor personnel, these personnel need to contact the responsible packaging activity to ascertain packaging requirements. Packaging requirements are maintained by the Inventory Control Point’s packaging activities within the Military Service or
Defense Agency, or within the military service’s system commands. Packaging data retrieval is available from the managing Military Department’s or Defense Agency’s automated packaging files, CD-ROM products, or by contacting the responsible packaging activity.
