About this file
This is a military specification (MIL-S-82155B) from March 1991 that details requirements for scarlet stripes used on U.S. Marine Corps dress trousers. The specification covers four types of stripes with different finished widths: Type I (2 inches) for general officers, Type II (1-1/2 inches) for officers, Type III (1-1/8 inches) for noncommissioned officers, and Type IV (9/16 inches) for JROTC personnel.
The document provides detailed manufacturing requirements, including the use of wool broadcloth in scarlet shade 2501 as the basic material, specific construction methods for folding and basting edges, and packaging specifications. Quality assurance provisions require inspection of materials, construction, and finished measurements. The stripes must be cut to lengths of 100 ± 3/8 inches and packaged in bundles of 25 stripes each. Shipping containers must hold 16 bundles (400 stripes) and meet specific military packaging standards. The specification includes inspection criteria for defects and acceptance quality levels (AQL) of 1.5 for visual and dimensional examinations and 2.5 for packaging examination.
