About this file

This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for XRF detector readout electronics for Argonne National Laboratory's Advanced Photon Source (APS) beamlines. The technical requirements specify electronics capable of reading up to thirteen channels of silicon drift and high purity germanium detectors, with specific performance parameters including a full-spectrum readout rate over 100 kHz, deadtime less than 10%, energy resolution under 200 eV, and list mode event tracking with timing resolution under 50 ns. The electronics must be compatible with EPICS, have software-programmable spectrum bins, and include an automated calibration procedure.

The SOW indicates a 9-month delivery timeline following contract award, with installation planned at the 19-ID beamline end station. Quality assurance requirements mandate compliance with national testing laboratory standards and electrical safety regulations. The components will be warranted for 12 months after installation, with on-site installation to be performed by beamline staff with vendor assistance. The solicitation is issued by the Department of Energy Office of Science, seeking Xspress 3X Mk2 8 and 13-channel readout systems or a domestically manufactured equivalent, with responses required by 12:00 pm CST on January 21, 2026.

Introduction

APS beamlines 25-ID, 20-BM, and 2-ID count scanning probe micro x-ray fluorescence (XRF) and micro x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) among their available x-ray characterization techniques. These techniques require fast detector readout electronics. The technical requirements for these electronics are described below.

Technical Requirements

The requirements for the XRF detector readout electronics are listed below.

· Readout up to thirteen channels of silicon drift (SD) and high purity germanium (HPGe) detectors

· Compatibility with reset Cube (XGLab) preamps

· Full-speed EPICS support, which is open-source

· Continuous and sustained full-spectrum readout rate over EPICS >=100 kHz

· Deadtime < 10% with input count rate = 1Mcps

· Energy resolution < 200 eV at 6 keV with input count rate = 1Mcps

· List modes (energy and timestamp of every event correlated to a global clock) with timing resolution < 50 ns

· Live dead time correction via both full-spectrum and list mode

· Software programmable number of bins per full spectrum (i.e., 1024, 2048 and 4096)

· Automated calibration procedure

· Control computer with at least 10 GbE connections to electronics and beamline network Schedule Electronics shall be delivered within 9 months of the award of the contract.

Quality Assurance Requirements Successful acceptance of electronics at ANL will depend on satisfaction of the technical requirements listed in previous section. Beamline representatives and APS-U staff will make this determination.

All electrically energized systems shall be listed by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL). A NRTL list can be found at https://www.osha.gov/dts/otpca/nrtl. All connections and terminations need to be NFPA 70 latest edition compliant. If integrated assemblies of electrical components have not been tested, the vendor must be able to demonstrate that the assemblies or individual components have been constructed according to applicable standards such as those associated with Underwriters Laboratories (UL), the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), Semiconductor Equipment Manufacturers International (SEMI), or comparable standards organizations located outside the United States. If the system is not listed by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s NRTL Database, it will be inspected by the ANL Designated Electrical Equipment Inspectors (DEEI) program.

The following criteria will be used for determining acceptance:

· Written report verifying that the inspection data meets the requirements

· No shipping damages.

· Passes visual inspection for anomalies.

· Written correspondence by the supplier of any deviations using the APS-U Supplier Disposition Report (SDR) form, as required.

Warranty The manufactured components shall be warranted for 12 months after installation at the 19-ID beamline end station.

Installation On-site installation of the XRF electronics at the APS end station will be carried out by the beamline staff with assistance from the vendor.

Protection of Materials and Equipment During Shipment

The electronics shall be delivered to the APS-U in a manner that protects the product from any damage.
