PART 1

GENERAL

1.1.Introduction: Arlington National Cemetery is our nation's most sacred shrine and the final resting place for our most revered military and civilian leaders. ANC receives millions of visitors each year - including visits from the President of the United States of America, other heads of state, family members of the deceased, and millions of tourists from around the world. Six thousand or more funerals are conducted yearly – in addition to over 2,000 other ceremonies, such as commemorations, wreath ceremonies, and head-of-state visits. These ceremonies and funerals often receive the intense focus of the press and other media. Due to the significance and attention received, strict adherence to the project specifications is essential. The successful contractor forms a true partnership with the Federal Government to ensure those who served our nation are properly honored.

The stonework of the wall pilasters will be reconstructed using the same stones as salvaged and documented for those features. The stonework of the wall section panels between each pier will be re-laid with the same random pattern and joint size and character to match the historic wall samples and outlined in the Spewick Report (SPC Project Test Panel Program, 2015). Pilasters shall be reconstructed in the same position as existing, using the same pilaster-to-pilaster offset as existing. Stonework tie-in to adjacent, non-repaired wall sections shall result in a finished appearance that to the greatest extent possible eliminates any visually identifiable transition from newly constructed and / or re-constructed sections with existing portions of the historic stone wall. Anomalies in the stonework of obvious later repairs will be removed and replaced following the historic characteristics of the wall.

New joint flashing pieces shall be made to match the existing in size and material and composition. Joints between capstones shall remain open and un-mortared. Flashing shall extend 2” laterally under each capstone and shall extend 1” beyond finished face of the Stone Wall at each side Wall. Drainage “channel” at the flashing shall be rounded in profile, approximately 1/2” to 5/8” across and 1/2” in depth (conceptual cross section shown in Part 8, Technical Exhibit B). Contractor shall provide replacement capstones of a matching material and dimensional profile for locations at which re-use of existing capstones is not feasible due to condition.
