About this file

This file is an Excel template and instructions for creating electrical panel schedules and related documentation for federal construction projects. The template includes multiple worksheets for different types of electrical panels (single phase, three phase, distribution, switchboard) and includes functionality for calculating loads, demands, circuit breakers, and other electrical specifications. The template allows for automatic load transfer calculations between panels and provides standardized formatting for panel schedules that can be inserted into AutoCAD drawings.

The template includes detailed instructions for proper use, including requirements for Windows font installation, saving procedures, and steps for transferring loads between panels. It contains reference data tables for impedance values, conductor sizes, and demand factors. While comprehensive in its electrical engineering functionality, this is purely a technical template document and does not contain any specific requirements, deliverables or objectives for a particular project.

Why do we have new panel schedules?

1Not AutoCAD Command Dependant
These new panel schedules are not AutoCAD Command Dependant. As newer versions of AutoCAD are issued,
these Excel panel schedules should not require any adjustments.
2Automatic loading transfer.
Loads can be automatically recalculated from downstream panels to the panels feeding them. See "How to transfer
panel loads" below.
3Per phase load in distribution panel.
The distribution panels will also contain the per phase load for a more exact calculation.
4The unit panels are smaller
The unit panels have been condensed since connected loads in unit panels are irrelevant.
5Interactive descriptions
Column load headers (LTG, REC, MTR, etc..) contain popup information describing the load types and requirements
for entering loads in the specified column. This information can be accessed by placing the pointer over the
corresponding cell header.
6Calculations are shown
Calculations are shown on the bottom right of each panel sheet. The demand and the minimum panel ampacity
calculations are shown.

Before you begin

1This spreadsheet can be used with AutoCAD 2004 and newer without any special requirements.
This spreadsheet can be used in AutoCAD 2002 if the display resolution is a minimum of (1152 x 864).
Right-click on the desktop and select "PROPERTIES". Now select the "SETTINGS" tab to display the current
resolution. (See the IT department for assistance)
2Windows font "QUICK TYPE CONDENSED" must be installed for these schedules to display properly. Go to the
Windows control panel and open "FONTS". Scroll down thru the installed font files to see if the "QUICK TYPE
CONDENSED" font is installed. (See the IT department for assistance)

How to Use Panel Schedules

1Save this panel schedule file in the "ELEC" directory, or a subdirectory under "ELEC", under the job folder you
will be working on.

2 Select a panel schedule sheet at the bottom of your screen by right-clicking on the corresponding tab.

Your base panel options should be Unit-Bldg, Unit1ph, Unit3ph, Pnl1ph, Pnl3ph, Dist1ph, Dist3ph, Swbd3ph

3 Select the "Move or Copy" command, check the "Create a Copy" box, and then select "OK".

You will now want to give your panel a name.

4 Right-click on the tab at the bottom of the screen and select rename.

You can name your panel anything you like. The longer the name, the more space the tab will take up.
Keep it short.

You can modify the order of the panel tabs by selecting and dragging the tab across the bar.

5 Select the panel tab to begin work on the panel schedule.

6 Enter the voltage for your panel in the panel schedule (ex. 208/120).

7 You may now begin filling in panel information.

To set up a Unit Load Center Schedule, ensure that the unit name, square feet, and HVAC load are entered
correctly into the Unit-Bldg Mix. Enter only the HVAC loads that need to be calculated according to
NEC 220.82 and NEC 220.84. You may now enter the unit name in the appropriate cell of the load center schedule
to automatically update load center title & unit calculations title, as well as update square feet & HVAC load from one location.
The following information can be filled in on the 1ph, 3ph, Dist panel schedules:
Panel Size, Panel Mounting, Panel AIC rating, Breaker Sizes, Circuit Descriptions, Circuit Loads.
In special cases, you may need to edit the demand and minimum panel ampacity (WARNING!! Once the
demand is edited, the demand will not auto-calculate again unless the cell is re-programmed.
The following information should be filled in on the 1ph, 3ph, Dist panel calculations:
Largest Motor Loads and Interlocked loads (optional)
Largest Motor adds the required 25% to your calculation.
Interlocked loads are the smallest of two loads that cannot operate at the same time.
The following information can be filled in on the Unit panel schedule:
Panel Size, Panel Voltage, Panel Mounting, Panel AIC rating, Breaker Sizes, Circuit Descriptions.
Notice that loads will not be entered in the panel schedule because unit panel connected loads are irrelevant.

All panel notes should be done in AutoCAD.

There are many ways to easily modify, copy, and auto-fill loads, breakers, and descriptions in Excel. If you
are unfamiliar with this program, ask someone in your group to help you out.
8Now we want to insert the panel schedule into AutoCAD.
Select the panel schedule by clicking and dragging the top left corner of the panel to the lower right corner of
the panel so the entire panel is highlighted.

9 Right-click in the highlighted area and select "COPY".

(The rest of these directions are to be completed in AutoCAD.)
10Go to the model space in the AutoCAD drawing that you wish to place the panel schedule in.
11Select "EDIT", "PASTE SPECIAL" command in the toolbar. Then select "PASTE LINK".
The panel schedule should have popped into your drawing.
12You will now need to resize the schedule so the text will show up at the correct size.
Type "PROPERTIES" in the command line and hit the "Enter" key.
Place the mouse pointer over the inserted panel schedule and right-click the mouse.
Select "PROPERTIES" in the pop-up menu.
Enter the width in inches from the table at the top of these directions that corresponds to the scale of the
drawing you are inserting it into
13The panel schedule size can be changed by selecting the small blue box in the bottom right hand corner of
the Excel insertion. If the small blue box is not showing, you can click on the panel schedule and one
should pop up. The panel should be resized so that the width matches the length of the line that was inserted
as a block
14The panel schedule can now be moved to the desired location in model space by clicking and dragging the
schedule.
15The panel schedule may now be edited by double clicking on the inserted panel in AutoCAD.
This will automatically open the Excel file.

How to Transfer Panel Loads

*This procedure transfers the exact connected load per phase of a downstream panel to the panel feeding
panel. The transferred load will automatically update as loads are added to the downstream panel)
1Select the tab of the panel you wish to have the loads transfer from.
The panel connected loads are calculated and place below the panel schedule in a box with load and phase
descriptions.

2 Select all the loads in the box by clicking and dragging to highlight all the cells.

3 Right-click the highlighted area and select "COPY".

4 Select the tab of the panel you wish to have the loads transfer to.

5 Select the cells where the load is to be transferred to by clicking and dragging to highlight the area.

6 Right-click the highlighted area and select "PASTE SPECIAL".

7Select "PASTE LINK".
The cells should now contain the loads from the downstream panel. These loads will automatically update
as loads are added to the downstream panel.

How to Hide and Unhide rows in Panels

*Locate the row headers on the far left side of your panel schedule. They are in numerical order from the top of the
schedule on down.
*Notice on most of the panels that some numbers are skipped (i.e.. 1,4,5,6,….). This means that rows 2 and 3
are hidden. These rows are typically hidden because they contain calculation multipliers.
*Notice on the 3 phase panel that rows are hidden near the bottom of the panel (i.e.. …,28,29,96,97,…). These are
hidden rows containing additional panel sections that can be un-hidden when needed.
*Rows may be hidden to display the actual panel size (i.e.. 24 circuit, 30 circuit, etc.).

Hiding Rows

1Select the top row header of the rows you want to hide (i.e.. To hide rows 24-42, select row 24). Hold the shift key
and select the bottom row header of the rows you want to hide (i.e.. To hide rows 24-42, select row 42).
2Right-click in the shaded area and select the "Hide" command in the pop-up menu.
The rows that you selected and all the rows in between should now be hidden.

Un-Hiding Rows

1Select the row header above the rows you want to unhide (i.e.. To un-hide rows 24-42, select row 23). Hold the shift
key and select the row header below the rows you want to hide (i.e.. To un-hide rows 24-42, select row 43).
2Right-click in the shaded area and select the "Unhide" command in the pop-up menu.
The rows that you selected and all the rows in between should now be unhidden.

How to copy Panel Information

*To change a panel from a single phase panel to a three phase panel, you must copy the information from a single
phase panel to a new three phase panel in sections. Copy each side and each section of a muti-section panels separately.
1Select all the descriptions on the left side of the panel and copy-paste (paste special, formulas) them into the new panel.
Use "paste special, formulas" to aviod formatting problems with pasted cells.

2 Copy the right side of the panel the same way.

Things to Remember

*Be careful not to have multiple sessions of the panel schedule open for editing. This can cause data loss and
resizing problems.
*Make sure to close the Excel file before trying to save the AutoCAD file. Your machine may crash and you may loose any
unsaved information.
*The load columns for the right side of the panels have changed order to match the left side when read from left
to right. This was done to make transferring loads from downstream panels to feeding panels easier.
*For a load to be recalculated and shown properly in AutoCAD, the panel must be edited, the drawing must be
reopened, or the OLE link must be updated in from the Edit menu in the AutoCAD toolbar.
*Panels should be sized based upon "TOTAL AMPACITY".
Demand & Connected loads are the loads to be provided to the project owner or the power company as
requested.
*When you "HIDE" or "UNHIDE" rows in excel, the panel schedule needs to be re-inserted. This is done by
right-clicking the panel schedule in AutoCAD and selecting "CUT". The drawing should disappear from AutoCAD.
Go to the excel file and copy-paste your panel schedule back into AutoCAD.

What if someone asks for our panel schedules electronically so that they're editable (e.g. for as-builts)?

* So as not to allow anyone outside of JSE to our formulas and calculations:

* Save file to another location (don't change the filename).

*Go to your first Panelboard tab and highlight the panel schedule, demand calcs, and ampacity required calcs. Right click your
mouse button can copy. Right click again and paste special. When the past special tab appears, select "values" then hit ok.
*Repeat this process for all panels and calculations that are used for drawing output. This step overwrites the panel schedules
and calcs to show only values and not the formulas used to obtain the values.

* Delete all unused tabs from the entire spreadsheet (i.e. Directions tab, Dist3ph tab, Tabulation tab, Data 500 tab, etc.)

* Save file and transmit.
