Overview and Structure
English for STEM Preparatory Extra Curricular Online Learning Activity (e-STEM Prep) is a program that targets all preparatory students in governmental schools. It provides opportunities for prep students to learn and practice English language reading, listening, speaking, writing, and grammar independently with the support of English teachers.
Additionally, the program orients students to STEM high schools’ learning and teaching culture and increases their interest in science and mathematics.
A pilot of E-STEM Prep was run in April 2016 in 25 Governorates in Egypt: two schools in each Governorate - one rural and one urban school. Data from the pilot phase were collected and analyzed, and the program has been edited based on pilot phase findings.
An interactive CD was created to provide the 10 units with the preparatory students for independent use. The CD can be used offline.
The Preparatory English Extra Curriculum Activity training is offered for 200 preparatory schools’ English language TOTs and Supervisors: 5-10 from each governorate. The training aims to enable the trainees to deliver the training to preparatory school English language teachers, who will orient preparatory school students to the program. Training sessions will be delivered by English Trainers nominated by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and certified by the Professional Academy for Teachers (PAT).
Objectives
The objectives of the E-STEM Prep outreach program are to
1. Help the students learn and practice Reading, Listening, Grammar, Speaking, and Writing independently with the support of preparatory school English language teachers.
2. Orient students to STEM high schools’ learning and teaching culture and increase student interest in science and mathematics.
Training Framework
The training is run over the course of two days:
Day 1: Seminar (face-to-face). Sessions are held in the form of workshops. The participants are oriented with program background, pilot phase findings, and the interactive CD overview: User Guide, unit structure, references and resources, answer keys, and unit practice. In addition, Trainees receive a full training of specific General
English units (6 units) on the interactive CD.
Day 2: Experiential Training-Implementation. Trainees receive a full training of specific
STEM Content units (4 units) on the interactive CD. In addition, the participants will draft governorate’s Implementation Plans.
The training is designed to engage participants in group and pair work to:
1. Provide opportunities for different preparatory school English language TOTs and
Supervisors to learn through experiential practice how to use the interactive CD.
2. Model the kind of learning experience preparatory schools English language
TOTs and Supervisors will provide to preparatory school English language teachers in different governorates.
Preparatory English Extra Curriculum Training
Day 1
English Language Extra Curriculum Activity Training supports Preparatory English language teachers to always provide the necessary support to their students.
The independent learning approach has been adopted to help the students learn and practice reading, listening, grammar, speaking, and writing through structured and interactive computer-based tasks, with support from preparatory school English language teachers when needed. Another objective of the independent learning program is to provide students with opportunities to learn science and mathematics through the medium of English, as a means of building confidence in their ability to succeed in English-medium STEM high schools. This training is designed to provide participants with the opportunity to experience and reflect upon practices, strategies, and techniques which prompt independent learning.
Day 1 activities are divided into two categories described as follows:
Core Input Session- Workshop: This session will provide the participants with an introduction to the program background, the pilot experience and outcomes , and the content and structure of the interactive CD: the User Guide and one general English unit - Unit 1, Young Egyptian
Pioneers.
Practice and Micro-Training: Participants will have a chance to practice training with each other by skimming through the English units on the Interactive CDs and micro-training in groups.
Upon completion of their training session delivery, participants (peers) will comment on their own performance, and trainers and peers will also offer feedback.
Feedback: Participants will provide feedback on Day 1 core sessions and activities and make suggestions.
Day 2 activities are divided into two categories described as follows:
Practice and Micro-Training: Participants will have a chance to practice with the four STEM units of the Interactive CDs and micro-train them in groups. Upon completion of their training session delivery, participants (peers) will comment on their own performance, and trainers and peers will also offer feedback.
Implementation Plans: Participants from each governorate will have a chance to brainstorm and draft effective implementation plans to run the preparatory school teacher trainings in each governorate.
Feedback: Participants will provide feedback on Day 2 core sessions and activities and make suggestions.
Day # 1: Seminar (face-to-face)
Learning outcomes: With the use of handouts and visual aids, participants will be oriented to the program background, the pilot experience and outcomes, the interactive CD User Guide, and the structure of the unit structure. Participants will experience Unit 1 (Young Egyptian
Pioneers) and Unit 4 (Mathematics – Statistics) as examples (this training will serve as a model of how they can train other supervisors and teachers in their governorates). Participants will also be able to navigate the rest of the units’ structure on their own.
Room Arrangement: Participants should be grouped at tables according to their governorates.
