Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument Historic Furnishings Report
Scope of Work
1. PROJECT BACKGROUND
In 2017, Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument was created by presidential proclamation to commemorate, preserve, and interpret to the public the dramatic events of Project C and the struggle for human and civil rights that played out in Birmingham in the 1950s and 1960s. Within the monument are several prominent historic structures and landscapes that were pivotal to the events of 1963 and to the continued historic significance and relevance of the monument including the A.G. Gaston Motel which is directly managed by the National Park Service. The National Park Service owns one half of the motel complex and manages it in partnership with the City of Birmingham, which owns the other half.
The black-owned A.G. Gaston Motel was built by Arthur George Gaston to provide African Americans a place to go for first-class hotel and dining accommodations in segregated Birmingham. The motel was designed by Birmingham architect Stanley B.
Echols and originally constructed by Steel City Construction Company, also of Birmingham, in 1954. National and local leaders of Birmingham’s nonviolent civil rights movement chose this site as the headquarters to launch “Project C.” Journalists, activists, and celebrities from around the world converged here to document and support these efforts. At the height of civil rights activities in Birmingham, the motel became a target of the Ku Klux Klan and was bombed on Mother’s Day, May 12, 1963.
The Gaston Motel is a representative example of a midcentury modern motel that served African Americans during the era of segregation. The motel is also associated with the African American couple, A.G. and Minnie Gaston. A.G. Gaston was a regionally significant African American entrepreneur, millionaire, and philanthropist who built and operated the motel. Minnie Gaston was an educational advocate who founded and operated the Booker T. Washington Business College, which helped provide staffing for the motel and other local Black-owned businesses.
The Gaston Motel is a two-story flat-roofed motel court with a one-story office portion on either side of a drive-through into the interior court located at 1510 Fifth Avenue North in downtown Birmingham and is a contributing property to the Birmingham Civil Rights National Historic District.
2. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
The purpose of this contract is to provide a Historic Furnishings Report (HFR) for the A.G. Gaston Motel at Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument. The A.G. Gaston
Motel is currently being rehabilitated to the period of significance and will serve as the park’s visitor center and interpretive experience for visitors, allowing them to explore exhibits and rooms that recreate the period of significance centered around the historic events of 1963. The Motel is currently an empty shell as after having continued as a hotel until 1982, the complex was then converted to the A.G. Gaston Gardens, an apartment complex for the elderly until the death of Mr. Gaston in 1996. The property was acquired by the City of Birmingham in 2006 and was vacant for a significant period of time. The Historic Furnishings Report will focus on key spaces in the 2,028 sq ft hotel including the lobby and the famous "War Room."
There are currently limited museum collections and/or archival materials in the possession of the National Park Service.
