EXHIBIT FABRICATION SERVICES

MONOCACY NATIONAL BATTLEFIELD

1. PROJECT BACKGROUND

During the summer of 1864, the Confederacy carried out a bold plan to turn the tide of the Civil War in their favor. They planned to capture Washington, DC and influence the election of 1864. On July 9, however, Federal soldiers outnumbered three to one, fought gallantly along the banks of the Monocacy River in an effort to buy time for Union reinforcement to arrive in Washington, DC.

Monocacy was not one of the largest battles of the Civil War, but it had an impact much larger than many know. Confederates had successfully reached Washington, forcing Grant to send reinforcements northward, but their campaign was ultimately foiled by the delaying tactics of Lew Wallace and his men at Monocacy on July 9. Because of this, the Battle of Monocacy has forever been known as “The Battle That Saved Washington.”

The park visitor center opened in 2007, since opening the visitor center has hosted thousands of visitors including children during school field trips. Many of the existing exhibits need replacing, this task order shall be the full replacement of the second-floor exhibits at Monocacy National Battlefield.
