1.3 BACKGROUND

In 2025, the Dragon Bravo Fire caused catastrophic damage to the North Rim of Grand Canyon

National Park, destroying one hundred nine (109) buildings including lodging, concession, and support structures in the vicinity of the North Rim Lodge and Visitor Center. The fire severely impacted water, wastewater, and electrical infrastructure. The loss of these facilities disrupted traditional housing arrangements and eliminated permanent restroom and shower amenities for park staff.

As part of the Park’s phased recovery strategy, seasonal cabins will be used as temporary housing for North Rim employees during the 2026 operating season. While these cabins provide shelter, they lack sufficient utility connections and sanitary facilities to support projected staffing levels.

The North Rim typically opens for seasonal visitation from 15 May through 15 November each year, welcoming approximately 500,000 visitors annually. During the open season, visitors frequent the Lodge and Visitor Center area for lodging, dining, interpretive programs, and as a primary staging area for Bright Angel Point Trail and other popular destinations.
