Answers to bidder inquires include additional applicable documents.

1. What size nitrogen line is required for lab? UFC 3-401-01 para 2-2.7 “Interior distribution must be designed and constructed in accordance with the Compressed Air and Gas Institute’s Compressed Air and Gas Handbook” FLOW RATE anticipated at point of use is 10 SCFH.

2. Do we have to supply nitrogen regulators to lower existing nitrogen pressure at drops or is it already low enough? Regulator required - N2 must be able to be regulated between 2-5 PSI. Pressure gages are required on each side of the regulator.

3. How many nitrogen ports are required? One.

4. Can nitrogen piping be ran down the face of the drywall or do we have to recess it back into wall? Installation of piping must be coordinated with the installation of the fume hood enclosure, regulator, valves, etc. Piping must also be in compliance with the Compressed Air and Gas Institute’s Compressed Air and Gas Handbook and all applicable codes, UFC requirements, and manufacturer’s recommendations.

5. Do we just terminate the nitrogen drops with a threaded nitrogen rated valve? Appropriately sized Nitrogen Rated Valve and Quick Disconnect - SERIES A ,1/4″ BODY SIZE X 3/8″ NPT,VALVED , 303

STAINLESS STEEL, BUNA.

6. Any specific material requirements for the new exhaust hood? The enclosure shall be a dry space and prevent N2 from entering the lab space. Nitrogen pressure and FLOW have been identified and provided. Hood enclosure must meet or exceed all tests as required in AHSRAE 110-2016. Enclosure must be sized to fit in the area as indicated. Enclosure must provide the greatest amount of workspace possible. Features of the hood must include powder coated and/or stainless components to the greatest extent possible. Exhaust hood enclosure must mount to laboratory grade powder coated locking base cabinet with adjustable shelves.

7. How many CFM are required for the new exhaust hood fan? Location and CFM of exhaust fan is the responsibility of the contractor to ensure proper operation and a safe lab environment.

Fume hoods shall be balanced with an inward flow, to a minimum of 100 feet per minute (fpm) face velocity across the opening, with a minimum of 70 fpm at any point.

The calculation for the CFM of a fume hood is obtained by multiplying the FACE OPENING (window of the fume hood) and the FACE VELOCITY. The FACE OPENING value is the maximal open Width x Height or your fume hood while FACE VELOCITY references the capture distance i.e. depth of the fume hood.

ANSI/AIHA Z9.5: “New and remodeled hoods shall be equipped with a flow-measuring device.”

– OSHA Part 1910.1450. OSHA stands for Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The agency regulations regarding fume hood operation are listed in the Code of Federal Regulations Volume 29 Part 1910.1450. This code addresses several aspects of laboratory design and operation. Regarding hoods it is primarily concerned with airflow at the face of the hood, monitoring, maintenance and exhaust.

– ANSI/ASHRAE 110-1995. Method of Testing Performance of Laboratory Fume Hoods. This standard is published by the American National Standards Institute and the American Society of heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers, Inc. It concerns itself primarily with methods of testing fume hoods to check their operation.

– ANSI/AIHA Z9.5. Titled “The American National Standard for Laboratory Ventilation” this standard is published by ANSI and the American Industrial Hygiene Association. It covers a variety of lab ventilation issues including hood monitoring, face velocities and exhaust.

– NFPA 45. This standard is prepared by the National Fire Protection Association. It recommends hood construction, location, fire protection, specialty hoods, identification, inspection, testing and maintenance and exhaust.
