cycletime Puzzle Scenario: A team of 15 has just completed this activity. They were successful in getting the puzzle together after 35 minutes, but were unsuccessful in developing a process to disassemble and reassemble the puzzle as required in the activity instructions, and they did not complete the “time trial” portion of the activity. Of the 15 people: 4 were very engaged in the process; an additional 7 were somewhat engaged/trying to be helpful; and the remaining 4 were totally disengaged in the process.

Please describe in no more than one page, how you would debrief this activity under these circumstances, keeping in mind program objectives and the below themes.

Themes: Planning and Problem Solving, Communication, Analytical Skills, Roles and Responsibilities, Interdependence, Process Improvement, Managing Restricted Resources Time: 75 Minutes (60 Minutes Activity, 15 Minutes Debrief) Purpose: Develop Team Cohesion And Respond to Time Pressures while Managing Personnel Reassignments Materials: One Cycle Time Puzzle (Project Adventure kit including wooden puzzle (14 pieces, bag, and laminated task sheets (4), wax pencils (4)) Description:

Each team will have 45 minutes to assemble the puzzle according to the provided diagram within a “world-class performance time” of one minute. Teams first assemble the puzzle, followed by identifying a repeatable process that can be executed within the limited timeframe. Teams may practice as many times as possible within the allotted 45 minutes. At the conclusion of 45 minutes, teams have two timed-trials, followed by one timed execution.

Setup:

On a large grassy area (carpeted when performed indoors), place the puzzle boards in a stack from shortest to longest. Hand out two copies of the laminated Cycle Time Puzzle Task Sheet.

Execution:

The facilitator explains that the objective of the activity is to develop a repeatable process that successfully assembles the puzzle according to the diagram within the world-class performance time of one minute. The following rules apply.

1. The team has 45 minutes to assemble the puzzle.

2. The team must assemble the puzzle to look like the provided diagram.

3. The timed assembly process will start with the boards stacked in a pile, longest boards on the bottom to shortest boards on top.

4. Teams may practice the assembly process many times within the provided hour.

5. The boards many not be marked in any way.

6. The floor may not be marked in any way.

7. At the end of 45 minutes teams have two timed-trials, followed by one execution attempt that will be stopped at the end of one minute.
