About this file

This document outlines the salient characteristics for an adjustable racking row storage system designed specifically for aircraft battery storage. The procurement requires two complete racking rows of reduced-height, heavy-duty adjustable racking containing 4 structural sections per row (8 total) to house roll-out pallets. The system must include 32 total 100% extension roll-out pallets measuring 52 inches wide by 48 inches deep, each rated at 2,000 pounds capacity to safely store densely packed Lead-Acid, Ni-CAD, and Lithium-Ion aircraft batteries without structural buckling. Additional components include complete top frames, cross-bracing, and column protectors for both rows, with on-site installation required.

The storage system must comply with multiple regulatory and industry standards, including the current edition of the California Building Code (Title 24, Part 2), ASCE 7 Section 15.5.3 for nonbuilding structures and steel storage racks, and ANSI MH16.1/MH16.3 governing specifications for industrial steel storage racks. The contractor must ensure compliance with applicable OSHA requirements, specifically 29 CFR 1926.441 regarding corrosion-resistant materials designed to prevent hydrogen accumulation and chemical pooling, 29 CFR 1910.176(b) for secure storage, and 29 CFR 1910.159 for fire sprinkler clearance and load capacity placards. The contractor must certify that all racking and pallet assemblies are designed, tested, and manufactured per ANSI MH16.1 and AWS structural welding codes, with system uprights anchored to the floor slab per manufacturer specifications and high-visibility load plaques permanently affixed to each bay indicating the 2,000-pound shelf capacity.

Adjustable Racking Row Salient Characteristics

• 2 Complete Racking Rows of reduced-height, heavy-duty adjustable racking.

• Sections per Row: 4 (8 Total) Structural sections to house the roll-out pallets.

• 100% Extension Roll-out Pallets: 16 per row (32 Total) 52" wide x 48" deep roll-out pallets rated at 2,000lbs each to safely house densely packed Lead-Acid, Ni-CAD, and heavy Lithium-Ion aircraft batteries without structural buckling.

• Structural Protection: 1 Set Complete top frames, cross-bracing, and column protectors for the two rows.

• On-site installation of the storage system

• Compliance with California Building Code (CBC): Must comply with the current edition of the CBC (Title 24, Part 2)

• Compliance with ASCE 7 (Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures): Specifically, Section 15.5.3 (Nonbuilding Structures: Steel Storage Racks)

• Compliance with ANSI MH16.1 / MH16.3 (Rack Manufacturers Institute - RMI): The governing specification for the design, testing, and utilization of industrial steel storage racks and cantilevered systems

• Storage systems must be compliant with all relevant OSHA requirements:

o OSHA 29 CFR 1926.441. Racking materials and coatings must be highly resistant to corrosive battery electrolytes (acid/alkali) and designed to prevent the dangerous accumulation of off-gassed hydrogen or pooled chemicals.

o OSHA 29 CFR 1910.176(b) (Secure Storage) o OSHA 29 CFR 1910.159 (Fire Sprinkler Clearance) - Load Capacity Placards:

OSHA enforces the requirement that maximum load limits for the racking systems must be clearly posted on the racks (typically using high-visibility load plaques showing max shelf and bay weight capacities) The contractor shall certify that all provided racking and roll-out pallet assemblies are designed, tested, and manufactured in accordance with ANSI MH16.1 and AWS structural welding codes. System uprights must be anchored to the floor slab per manufacturer specifications, and high-visibility load plaques detailing the 2,000lbs shelf capacity must be permanently affixed to each bay.
