About this file
This document is a Statement of Objectives outlining salient characteristics for an adjustable racking system designed to store densely packed Lead-Acid, Ni-CAD, and heavy Lithium-Ion aircraft batteries without structural buckling. The contractor shall provide two complete systems of reduced-height, heavy-duty adjustable racking configured in back-to-back orientation as a single deep-storage structural unit, accommodating a total height of 6–7 feet. Each system comprises four rows and four columns for a total of sixteen storage compartments per system, with 16 pallets measuring 52 inches wide by 48 inches deep, each capable of supporting 2,000 pounds. All pallets must feature 100% extension roll-out capability for forklift access and include a built-in 1¼-inch back lip to prevent inventory from sliding off the rear. The systems must include one complete set of top frames and cross-bracing structurally connecting the two systems, heavy-duty front column protectors for all exposed uprights, and on-site installation.
The racking systems must comply with California Building Code (CBC Title 24, Part 2), ASCE 7 Section 15.5.3 for steel storage racks, and ANSI MH16.1/MH16.3 standards. Materials and coatings must be highly resistant to corrosive battery electrolytes (acid/alkali) and designed to prevent dangerous accumulation of off-gassed hydrogen or pooled chemicals per OSHA 29 CFR 1926.441. The contractor shall certify that all racking and roll-out pallet assemblies are designed, tested, and manufactured in accordance with ANSI MH16.1 and AWS structural welding codes. System uprights must be anchored to the floor slab per manufacturer specifications, and high-visibility load plaques detailing the 2,000-pound shelf capacity must be permanently affixed to each bay per OSHA requirements for fire sprinkler clearance and secure storage.

Adjustable Racking Row Salient Characteristics
Objective: shelving designed to safely house densely packed Lead-Acid, Ni-CAD, and heavy Lithium-Ion aircraft batteries without structural buckling.
System Configuration & Layout
• Total Racking Systems: Two (2) complete systems of reduced-height, heavy-duty adjustable racking with heavy-duty industrial storage pallets, including a built-in 1- 1/4 inch (32 mm) back lip feature to prevent inventory from sliding off the rear. The industrial storage pallet would be capable of being dynamically inserted into or removed from the racking framework and should pair directly with the matching structural shelf.
• Layout: Systems are to be configured in a back-to-back orientation as a single deep-storage structural unit.
• Total Height: Site can accommodate between 6’ – 7’.
Each system should comprise of:
• Four (4) rows and four (4) columns, for a total of sixteen (16) storage compartments
• Pallets: 100% Extension Roll-out, able to be accessed with forklift o Total Quantity: 16 (4 per row) o Dimensions: 52" wide x 48" deep.
o Load Capacity: 2,000 lbs per pallet.
• Top Frames & Bracing: One (1) complete set of top frames and cross-bracing structurally connecting the two systems for reinforced stability.
• Column Protectors: Heavy-duty front column protectors provided for all exposed uprights
Installation:
• On-site installation of the storage system
Compliance:
• Compliance with California Building Code (CBC): Must comply with the current edition of the CBC (Title 24, Part 2)
• Compliance with ASCE 7 (Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for
Buildings and Other Structures): Specifically, Section 15.5.3 (Nonbuilding Structures: Steel Storage Racks)
• Compliance with ANSI MH16.1 / MH16.3 (Rack Manufacturers Institute - RMI): The governing specification for the design, testing, and utilization of industrial steel storage racks and cantilevered systems
Adjustable Racking Row Salient Characteristics
• OSHA 29 CFR 1926.441. Racking materials and coatings must be highly resistant to corrosive battery electrolytes (acid/alkali) and designed to prevent the dangerous accumulation of off-gassed hydrogen or pooled chemicals.
• OSHA 29 CFR 1910.176(b) (Secure Storage)
• OSHA 29 CFR 1910.159 (Fire Sprinkler Clearance) - Load Capacity Placards: OSHA enforces the requirement that maximum load limits for the racking systems must be clearly posted on the racks (typically using high-visibility load plaques showing max shelf and bay weight capacities) The contractor shall certify that all provided racking and roll-out pallet assemblies are designed, tested, and manufactured in accordance with ANSI MH16.1 and AWS structural welding codes. System uprights must be anchored to the floor slab per manufacturer specifications, and high-visibility load plaques detailing the 2,000lbs shelf capacity must be permanently affixed to each bay.
