About this file
This is a certified Test, Adjust, and Balance (TAB) report dated September 4, 2024, for the Jesse Brown Animal Research Labs Veterinary Medical Unit Cage Wash System located on the 7th floor of Building 11 (Taylor) at 820 S Damen Ave, Chicago. The report, prepared by TL Services, Inc. (NEBB Contractor #2932), details the baseline performance testing of an unencumbered exhaust system prior to the installation of new Bottle Washer and Cage Wash equipment.
The report identifies system performance issues, with the fan running at 3.31 inwg and near maximum motor capacity (2 amps against 2.1 amp design). Key findings show the Bottle Washer connection (3" tube) pulling 57 CFM and Cage Wash flex (5" hose) drawing 780 CFM, for a total of 837 CFM inside the Cage Wash room. The report recommends increasing the Bottle Wash connection to 5" and the Cage Wash intake to 6-8" to reduce static pressure and motor load. Additional recommendations include relocating the duct connection box below the hard ceiling for easier maintenance access. The report includes detailed calibration certificates for testing equipment and is certified by John Sides Jr., P.E. CEM QCP NEBB_CP.

TAB REPORT SUMMARY
7th Floor Animal Labs, Taylor (Building 11)
The data was taken to show how the system is operating at this point. Of course, the system load is not installed (the Bottle Washer and Cage Wash), so we should see an unencumbered system. At this point, the Bottle Washer connection is essentially a 3” tube (or hose). It is pulling 57 CFM. The Cage Wash flex is a 5” hose. The Cage Wash flex draws 780 CFM. The fan system is pulling 3.31 inwg at the fan. The total CFM inside the Cage Wash room is 837 CFM. We measured the air flow at the fan and determined it to be 869.2 CFM. The conclusion from this information is that the ductwork between the Cage Wash room and the exhaust fan on the roof has no major leaks or restriction losses. Total loss is 32 CFM.
The Fan running at 3.31 inwg, is concerning. Our opinion is that the 3” and 5” hoses are contributing to the high static value. To make the system run, it was sped up to its limit. The motor amp draw averages around 2 amps for the three phases. The Full Load Amp motor design is 2.1 amps. There is no more room on the motor.
In our opinion, the solution is to increase the sizes of the intake lines at the Bottle and Cage Wash machines. The square connection on the Bottle Wash machine is equivalent to a 5” line. The suggestion is to remake the connection at 5” instead of 3”.
This should reduce the static requirement on the fan and should bring down the overall amp draw of the motor. We also suggest that the Cage Wash intake be increased to at least 6” if not an 8” line. Upon these changes it should allow the fan speed to be reduced and still attain the current air flow draw. If the machines require more air than the old machines, this may also work in the system’s favor.

A suggestion made on the walk through is that the current duct connection box, which is connected to the duct via a flange, be removed and a new connection box made and bring the line connections below the hard ceiling. This will make it much easier to work on in the future. We concur with this idea. There will still need to be a short piece of flex duct to make the final connection. This is to reduce vibration and noise.

Fan sheave is sized to make the fan run faster. System currently is almost at full load amps. There isn't enough room to speed up the fan any more.
