LANDSCAPING

The landscaping surrounding the VA CLC (Bldg. 8) will largely follow the previously-approved Phase 1 landscape, for continuity. The overall intent is to beautify the site, create a more pleasant atmosphere to promote health and wellbeing, screen undesirable views, and augment the physical security design.

Key Features of Planting Plan

• Plant palette will be comprised of native and naturalized species, characterized by low water use and maintenance requirements

• Rear courtyard will create intimate spaces augmented by plant materials in aesthetically pleasing arrangements, to enhance the healing environment of the CLC.

• Planting beds will be configured to take advantage of site and building runoff to reduce need for potable irrigation water

Key Features of Irrigation Plan

• Irrigation system require new point of connection outside the building, tapping into an 8” “hard-water” service line, upstream from the building’s softened system

• Existing backflow prevention device installed in mechanical room will be removed and re-used outside, in a new hot-box enclosure

• Lawn areas will receive low-precipitation-rate stream rotor spray heads

• Plants and shrubs will be irrigated via a drip system for water conservation

Planting Plan Concept:

• The site landscaping will utilize plants that are drought tolerant as well as hardy throughout the year. Although most xeric plants are by nature small in stature, the site plan will also include some trees with a substantial shade canopies to provide relief for residents and their visitors. Incorporating shrubs with a fragrance and muted pastel flowers gives the patients in the space a sense of calm and healing.

• Planting beds were previously mulched with decorative gravels and cobble-sized stone. That mulch will be pushed aside, or removed and stockpiled, as necessary to accommodate new irrigation and plant installations, and replaced to its original configuration. Overall, the planting palette will serve to create a homogeneous space that connects the campus visually and gives residents a sense of comfort and healing.

Planting palette:

• Trees: Desert Willow (Chilopsis linearis), Shumard Oak (Quercus shumardii), Serviceberry (Amelachier grandiflora ‘Autumn Brilliance’), Chinese Pistache Pistacia chinensis), Japanese Black Pine (Pinus thunbergii ‘Majestic Beauty’), Raywood Ash (Fraxinus oxycarpa), Shademaster Honeylocust (Gleditsia tracanthose inermis).

Shrubs: Fernbush (Chamaebateria millefolium), Tall Blue Rabbitbrush

(Chamisa), Turpentine Bush (Ericameria laricifolia), Pawnee Buttes

Sandcherry (Ericameria laricifolia), Blue Star Juniper (Juniperus squamata), Crimson Pygmy Barberry (Berberis thunbergii), 3-Leaf Sumac

(Rhus trilobata), Creeping Mahonia (Mahonia repens).

STRUCTURAL

Existing and New Trash Enclosure

Structural design modifies the existing trash enclosure to accommodate the new Oxygen Storage tank by deleting existing bollards, cutting an opening in the existing CMU wall for a new man door required by code, and provides new by-pass sliding doors, pavement section, and curbing for ease of access be the oxygen delivery truck.

Design for a new trash enclosure will match the existing trash enclosure, to be located south of existing trailer building T-15D and will utilize the existing (re-located) trash enclosure doors.
