About this file

This is a specification document for rooftop fall protection equipment required by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The specification outlines requirements for furnishing and installing a modular roof edge protection walkway and guardrail system designed to provide anti-slip, level surfaces on roofing while ensuring worker safety compliance with OSHA standards. The system includes bases, walkway sections, pipe railings, uprights, fittings, and related components configured as a freestanding installation using recycled PVC counterbalances that does not penetrate the roof surface. The walkway system must accommodate metal profile standing seam and membrane roof types, with guardrails on both sides meeting OSHA 1920.29 requirements and compliance standards including EN 516 Class 1-C and UL 94 Class HB fire ratings.

The specification requires walkway components with fiberglass-reinforced nylon treads featuring open tread design for water drainage and aluminum bearer bars meeting slip resistance standards per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.22 and British Standard BS 4592. Approved manufacturers include Kee Safety Inc., with owner-approved substitutions acceptable. Installation must comply with manufacturer instructions, with all connections torqued to 29 foot-pounds and handrails accurately positioned from established lines and levels. The contractor bears responsibility for crane lift services to rooftop work areas and procurement of all necessary permits for traffic control and lane closures during lifting operations, along with providing barriers and personnel for vehicular and pedestrian traffic control. Materials must be delivered in good condition and stored in manufacturer's unopened packaging until installation, with all damaged products repaired or replaced before substantial completion.
