About this file

This is a technical specifications document for roof hatch fall protection equipment required by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee as part of a rooftop fall protection furnish and install project. The specification calls for the Safety Rail Company SRC Roof HatchGuard Non-Penetrating Fall Protection system, which includes railings and a self-closing gate designed to protect personnel accessing roof hatches. Two roof hatch sizes are specified: 36 x 42 inches and 36 x 58 inches. The system must comply with OSHA standards including 29 CFR 1910.28(b), 1910.29, 1926.501(b)(4), and 1926.502. Key features of the required equipment include one-piece welded design requiring no assembly, no drilling into the hatch or roof, a 24-inch safe landing zone, built-in grab bars, and a 42-inch nominal height railing system constructed of 2-inch by 14-gauge hot-rolled square tubing. The system must withstand a minimum 200-pound structural load in any direction and include roof pads to protect the membrane.

Contractor responsibilities include field measurements to verify hatch dimensions before fabrication, procurement of crane lift services for rooftop delivery, and securing all necessary permits for traffic control and lane closures during material delivery. The specification requires manufacturer's one-year warranty and submission of manufacturer data sheets, preparation instructions, storage and handling requirements, installation methods, and shop drawings prior to work commencement. Materials must be delivered in undamaged condition in manufacturer's unopened packaging, inspected upon receipt, palletized and labeled by roof level, and stored until installation. The manufacturer must provide American Welding Society certification documentation for AWS D1.1 and AWS D1.3 welding standards prior to shipment. All steel surfaces must be hot-dip zinc galvanized, and installed products must be protected until project completion with damaged items repaired or replaced before substantial completion.
