About this file

This is a Requirements Correlation Table for the BEAR Environmental Control Unit (ECU), dated 11 April 2025, that establishes threshold and objective specifications for a military-grade heating and cooling system.

The BEAR ECU is a heat pump-based system designed for field deployment with dual shipping configurations: 12 units per 463L pallet (air) or 4 units per Tricon (surface). The threshold weight is 675 pounds, with an objective of 600 pounds. The system features 16-inch diameter supply and return ports with rigid screens and removable covers, a washable air filter, and includes two 10-foot ducts with "Y" sections for connecting to multiple shelters. The ECU incorporates fully enclosed forklift pockets, operates on slopes up to 10 degrees with integrated condensate drainage, and includes system and electrical schematics. It can be stacked four units high with alignment guides and includes retractable legs raising it 4-6 inches off the ground, with optional rubber wheel kits available.

Operationally, the ECU must function across temperature ranges of 50°F to 125°F for cooling and -25°F to 75°F for heating, with non-operating storage capability from -65°F to 160°F. It shall provide minimum cooling output of 60,000 BTU/hr at 125°F, minimum heating of 40,000 BTU/hr with supplemental resistive heating, and 2,000 SCFM evaporator airflow (objective: 2,200 SCFM). Power requirements are 3-phase, 50/60 Hz, 208/230 VAC, 60-amp, with threshold maximum consumption of 13 kW in cooling mode (objective: 10.5 kW). The system includes soft start technology limiting inrush current and features a 25-foot tethered remote thermostat plus onboard digital controls with Cool, Vent, Heat, and Off modes. Noise levels must not exceed 80 dB at 2 meters (objective: 75 dB). The ECU shall support a 20-year service life, be transportable in C-130 aircraft per MIL-STD-1791, require no special tools for maintenance with Mean Time To Repair not exceeding 2 hours, and comply with environmental standards including salt-fog and desert sand/dust resistance per MIL-STD-810. The system must be coated with Sand Matte thermal reflective coating (color 33446) per MIL-PRF-85285E, without Chemical Agent Resistant Coating (CARC), and include TM86-01 verified technical manuals 60 days prior to production delivery along with multi-media training per AFCEC QTP requirements.
