3.9 Construction. The coveralls shall be constructed as specified in Table VI, although the manufacturer is not required to follow the exact sequence of operations as listed therein.
The stitches per inch specified in Table VI shall be interpreted to be the minimum and the maximum stitches per inch. Additional basting and holding stitching to facilitate the manufacture of the coverall shall be permitted, provided the thread used for the additional basting and holding stitching is removed or shall not show on the finished coverall.
3.9.1 Stitches and seams. Seaming shall be consistent and exhibit a uniform appearance and shall conform to ASTM D6193. Where two or more seam or stitch types are specified for the same part of an operation, any one of them may be used. Seam allowances shall be maintained with the seams sewn so that no raw edges, run-offs, twists, pleats, puckers, or open seams shall result. All seams shall start and finish evenly. Thread tension shall be maintained so that there shall be no tight or loose stitching. Edge stitching and topstitching shall be uniformly gauged throughout the garment. The depth between the fold of seams that is required to be worked out shall be less than 1/16 inch. The guides and knives on safety trimming shall not exceed 1/16 inch.
3.9.1.1 Type 301 stitching. Ends of all stitching shall be backstitched or overstitched not less than 1/4 inch except where ends are turned under or caught in other seams or stitching.
Ends of continuous lines of stitching shall overlap not less than 1/2 inch except on labels where a minimum of three stitch overlap is required. The lock shall be imbedded in the material sewn.
3.9.1.2 Type 401 stitching. When stitch Type 401 is used, the looper thread shall be on the inside of the coverall.
3.9.1.3 Repairs of stitching. Repairs shall be as follows:
3.9.1.3.1 Repairs to Type 301 and 401 stitching.
a. When thread breaks or bobbin run-outs occur during stitching, the stitching shall be repaired by restarting the stitching a minimum of 1/2 inch back from the end of the stitching.
b. Thread breaks or two or more consecutively skipped or run-off stitches noted during inspection of the item (in-process or end item) shall be repaired by overstitching. The stitching shall start a minimum of 1/2 inch in back of the defective area, continue over the defective area a minimum of 1/2 inch beyond the defective area onto the existing stitching. Loose or excessively tight stitching shall be repaired by removing the defective stitching without damaging the materials and restitching in the required manner.
c. When making these repairs, the ends of the stitching are not required to be backstitched. The loose ends shall be trimmed by scissors.
d. Type 301 stitching may be used to repair Type 401 stitching in accordance with b and c, except substitute 3/4 inch for 1/2 inch wherever 1/2 inch appears.
CAUTION: Pulling or breaking the loose ends is not permitted.
3.9.1.3.2 Repairs to types 502, 503, and 504. Stitching repairs for types 502, 503, and 504 may be repaired in accordance with 3.9.1.3.1 b, except substitute 3/4 inch for 1/2 inch wherever 1/2 inch appears.
3.9.1.4 Thread ends. All thread ends shall be trimmed to 1/4 inch maximum length.
3.9.1.5 Bartacks. All bartack length shall be 3/8 to 1/2 inch in length and 16 to 22 stitches per bartack. Stitches per bartack are to be counted as visible needle punches, i.e. zig-zags, where straight stitches running underneath the zig-zags do not count. Bartacking shall be free from thread breaks and loose stitching. Bartacks are required at the specified reinforcement points as specified in Table V and Figures 5, 6, 7, 9, and 10.
