About this file

This is a FAR Part 11 Template Purchase Description for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Mouse Imaging Facility (MIF) to procure annual hardware and software maintenance support for a Micro Photonics Medikors DEXA InAlyzer Scanner (Serial Number: INZ-210602-M002). The acquisition is a renewal of an expired purchase order (POTS 25-006650, PO #7741544) and covers the base performance period from December 20, 2025 through December 19, 2026, with four optional one-year renewal periods extending through December 19, 2030. The contractor shall provide full support coverage including all associated system parts, the X-ray source, and software to ensure optimal equipment performance and reliability.

The required service includes one annual onsite visit by a Micro Photonics engineer to conduct preventive maintenance, which encompasses a full system check-up to optimize performance, verify safety, and ensure long-term reliability. The DEXA scanner generates fast radiographic images at two different X-ray energies to provide quantitative measurements of body composition including bone mineral content, fat, lean muscle, and bone density, serving as a high-throughput screening tool for the NIH's preclinical imaging research. The acquisition is essential for maintaining ongoing approved research studies without interruption and ensuring gold standard scientific data quality assurance across the MIF's imaging resources, which include MRI, micro-CT, ultrasound, photoacoustic imaging, bioluminescence, and fluorescence imaging capabilities.

PURCHASE DESCRIPTION

1. Statement of Need and Purpose:

This acquisition is for annual hardware and software maintenance support for its Micro Photonics Medikors DEXA InAlyzer Scanner. Annual maintenance and repair (as needed) are necessary and needed so that ongoing approved research studies that began prior to January 20, 2025 can continue without interruption, and investigators do not lose investment in these studies. It is vital that these machines are properly maintained for gold standard scientific data quality assurance.

This acquisition is a renewal of POTS 25-006650, PO #: 7741544 (NBS, Req.#: 7234037) that expired 12/19/25.

2. Background Information and Objective:

The NIH Mouse Imaging Facility (MIF) is a shared, intramural resource for preclinical imaging studies. The MIF provides NIH intramural researchers access to modern radiological imaging equipment optimized for noninvasive imaging studies of small subjects. The MIF provides intellectual, technical and material support for NIH investigators, and MIF resources include:

magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), micro-computed tomography (CT), high frequency ultrasound (US) with photoacoustic imaging (PAI), bioluminescence (BLI) and fluorescence imaging (FI). The MIF provides state-of-the-art anatomical, functional and molecular medical imaging resources for models of human disease.

This acquisition is important to maintain MIF imaging resources at the highest standards for accurate gold standard research data acquisition. Annual maintenance and repair (as needed) are necessary so that ongoing approved research studies that began prior to January 20, 2025 can continue without interruption, and investigators do not lose investment in these studies. It is vital that these machines are properly maintained for gold standard scientific data quality assurance.

This acquisition is for annual hardware and software maintenance support for its Micro Photonics Medikors DEXA InAlyzer Scanner. This equipment generates fast radiographic images at two different X-ray energies to provide quantitative measurements of body composition including bone mineral content, fat and lean muscle and bone density. This system is a high-throughput device. It is a good a screening tool to select which samples/subjects are best suited for higher resolution, more time consumptive imaging modalities like microCT which have a significantly longer acquisition time and even longer manual data processing times. Together with other MIF scanners, this increases the amount of gold standard data produced, saving valuable time and allowing more focused and efficient research on a better-selected subset of subjects/samples.
