About this file
This pre-solicitation notice provides details for the Integrated Biorefinery Facility (IBRF) North High Bay (NHB) Revitalization Custom Equipment procurement planned for Summer 2024. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory intends to release a Best Value Request for Proposal seeking custom equipment for the revitalization of its IBRF NHB. Interested parties are provided NREL's capability requirements and technical specifications in advance to allow preparations for strong proposal submissions in response to the expected RFP. The Department of Energy Office of Science is the contracting agency.

APPENDIX A
The “Equipment Included” columns are not all inclusive. These are to provide an idea of the type of instrumentation, rotating equipment, and vessels required to achieve the module and/or utility.
Processing Equipment/Unit Operations:
The following unit operations had FEL 1 completed. The budget may not accommodate all outlined unit operations. For this project, final scope/quantities may change to accommodate a fixed budget.
The unit operations will be divided into modular systems such as feed tank with pump, control valve, level indication, pressure indication, and flow indication. Other modules could be fixed bed reactors with a cooler and three phase separator downstream. The goal is to be able to move modules to allow researchers flexibility in how to achieve their overall process development philosophy. These modules are meant to operate integrated at a fuel production rate of approximately 1 barrel per day or 42 gallons per day.
2 Reactor Hydrotreater Unit Stripper – distillation column 1 Reactor Isomerization Unit Ion Exchange Solvent Extraction Anaerobic Digestor Liquid Liquid Extraction Absorber Adsorptions Thin Film Evaporator
The unit operations listed above are broken down further into modules. The modules might include, but are not limited to:
Module Title Equipment Included Quantity of Modules Feed/Product tank Tank, piping, control valve, level instrumentation, pump, pressure instrumentation, pressure relief valve, flow control valve, etc.
Fixed reactor Reactor construction from piping components, multipoint thermocouples, pressure instrumentation, distribution plates (internal), three phase separator, two pumps, condensers, heaters, clamshell heaters, pressure relief valves, etc.
3 - 4
Separations Column Distillation column in flanged 2 ft sections made from piping components, initial internal packing and/or cartridge trays, temperature instrumentation, pressure instrumentation, three - six zone clamshell heater, two pumps, level instrumentation, bottoms sump, etc.
Condenser System Cooling water exchanger, two pumps, overhead drum capable of three phase separation, level instrumentation, pressure instrumentation
2 - 3
Jacketed Vessel Systems Two jacketed vessels per module, with piping and control valving to enable switching to regenerate one of the jacketed vessels. Include pressure, flow, and temperature instrumentation for controls.
Gas/Vapor Feed System Four stage hydrogen compression system with intercoolers and knockout drums, pressure control valves, vents, pressure instrumentation, temperature instrumentation, etc
3 - 4
Liquid Recycle Loop System Pump, flow control valve, pressure instrumentation, flow instrumentation, temperatures, heat exchangers, etc.
Solids Containing Systems Anaerobic digestor, related instrumentation and online analytical connections.
Liquid/liquid extraction system capable of removing solids for continuous operation, related instrumentation, control points, and online analytical connections.
Thin film evaporator, most likely needs handle between 10 – 30 wt% solids and evaporate aqueous phase to concentrate hydrolysate.
1 each
Solid Feed System BSL2 municipal waste enclosed feed system
Control Systems Control cabinets and associated hardware for all associated unit operations/modules.
As many as needed
Gas/Vapor Recycle Loop System
Single stage compressor, heat exchanger for cooling, knockout pot, pressure control valve, temperature instrumentation and pressure instrumentation. Associated piping.

Analytical Equipment:
The unit operations for this renovated pilot plant facility will need online and offline analytical equipment to support process development. A large part of the goals associated with the project is to ensure complete heat and material balances. This includes instrumentation on the process unit operations, and access to analytical equipment for accurate and real time data.

Utility Equipment:
Utilities will be supplied and/or disposed of by various pieces of equipment.
Title Description & Assumptions Equipment List Electrolyzer Fed deionized water to an electrolyzer stack where saturated H2 and O2 are produced. Needs to have the capability to recycle water and spillback H2 for turndown cases.
Tank for deionized water, electrolyzer stacks totaling 500 kW power draw, compressors, knockout pots, heat exchangers with connections to cooling water, pressure control valves, appropriate instrumentation, an oxygen vent, and a pump.
Thermal Oxidizer
Flammable offgases, relief vents, and sample vents are directed to a central header that is swept towards a burner.
The burner is vented outside, to safely dispose of the vapors/gases.
Piping, nitrogen sweep hookups, drops every two feet, a thermal oxidizer capable of 100% H2 fuel, a knockout pot and pump.
Instrumentation for flow measurement, pressure, and temperature.
Vent Gas Scrubber
Gases/vapors routed to scrubber when containing H2S, other acids, foul smelling materials, etc so that those can be scrubbed with the appropriate materials to decrease the concentration being routed to the thermal oxidizer.
Vessel, random packing, level instrumentation, pumps, internal distributors, pressure instrumentation, flow control valves, piping, tank for scrubbing material, etc.
Autoclave Large autoclave for pilot-size biosafety level 2 work being conducted. Need to be able to sterilize larger pieces of equipment, not bench scale vessels.
“Off the shelf”, walk in autoclave
