About this file
This is a Purchase Description (PD) for United States Military Academy (USMA) cadet swords with scabbards and covers, issued on August 28, 2026 under document number WP-PD-26-02.
The specification establishes comprehensive requirements for manufacturing a complete sword assembly consisting of a stainless steel blade (UNS S42000, Rockwell C hardness 48-54), hilt assembly with four components (pommel, grip, cross guard, and leather cushion), scabbard with five components (body, mouthpiece, middle band with hook, shoe, and liners), and a protective flannelette cover. The finished sword must weigh 695 (±40) grams with overall length of 35-3/8 inches (±1/8), while the scabbard weighs 430 (±30) grams with length of 30-21/32 inches (±1/16). Key materials include stainless steel for the blade, copper-zinc alloys for hilt components, carbon steel for the scabbard body, and brown cellulose sheet for liners. The specification mandates nickel plating with minimum 10 microns thickness, clear lacquer coating on polished components, and precise craftsmanship including etching of the USMA insignia and maker's marks. First article inspection and conformance inspection are required, with sampling conducted per ASQ/ANSI Z1.4. Testing requirements include hardness (ASTM E18), plating thickness (ASTM D1005), dimensions using calibrated rulers, weight (ASTM D3776/D3776M), and functional performance verification. The liners are covered against failure for three years from date of receipt. Acquisition documents should specify required quantities, inspection acceptance quality limits, and packaging requirements per contract specifications.
