DNR PARKS AND RECREATION DIVISION
Otsego Lake State Park
Sewer, Electric and Toilet/Shower Replacement and Upgrades Project Statement, September 2022
The DNR Parks and Recreation Division (PRD) is requesting assistance with the Otsego Lake State Park sewer, electric, and toilet/shower building replacement and upgrades. It is anticipated all work associated with this project will occur in a coordinated fashion at the same time.
PROJECT BACKGOUND:
Otsego Lake State Park is located along old US 27 just south of Gaylord, in Otsego County Michigan. The area is known for its great fishing, lake side picnic area, and more than a half-mile of sandy beaches. The park features a 156-site campground, picnic shelters, mini cabin, fishing pier and boat launch.
Many of the park sewer systems were constructed in the mid-1930’s. All park buildings and the sanitation station are connected to a combination of dosing chambers, septic tanks, and drain fields. Over the years these systems have been modified and updated as buildings were replaced or added to the site. The last upgrade was in 2011 when the south campground toilet/shower (T/S) building and drain field was replaced. Many of these systems have exceeded their intended design life and need to be addressed to provide updated facilities that meet current codes. The park campground electric distribution system was last updated in 1987. The electrical system provides shared pedestals between sites which do not meet the demands of today’s camping public. In addition, there is a need for 50-amp power for larger recreational vehicles. The north toilet/shower building was constructed in 1975. Its plumbing systems are becoming outdated with plumbing parts difficult to find and the building does not meet current ADA accessibility requirements.
