Questions and Answers

Sol. No. NNK17607367Q, THSS Hydraulic Flex Hoses

Question 1:

Reference: Hydraulic Hose Brand

Question: Can I provide another brand of hose other than the Gates brand of hose called out in the spec sheet? The hose is just a fluid conductor and there are multiple hose manufacturers that manufactures hoses that meet or exceed the requirements of the Gates hose requested in this solicitation.

Answer to Question 1:

Substituting an equivalent or better hose product is acceptable provided pre-approval is received from NASA, be aware of the minimum flex hose bend radius and compliance to SAE J517 spec.

Question 2:

Question: Drawing KT02088 Hose Assemblies KT02088-5, KT02088-6, KT02088-7, KT02088-8, & KT02088-9 calls for an Find No. /Item No. 10 tube assembly which per the flex hose detail reflects a 8” Radius. A 8” Radius in not a standard radius for KSC-

SPEC-Z-0008 tubes outside a console. These will require a special dies to be manufactured to fabricate the tube assemblies. Can the following radius’s shown per

KSC-SPEC-Z-0008, page 9, Table 4 be used in lieu of the 8” Radius?

Example:

5” Radius for KT02088-5, KT00002-201343N, 1 1/4“ Tube Assemble

6” Radius for KT02088-6, KT00002-241883N, 1 1/2“ Tube Assemble

5” Radius for KT02088-7, KT00002-201343N, 1 1/4“ Tube Assemble

6” Radius for KT02088-8, KT00002-241883N, 1 1/2“ Tube Assemble

4” Radius for KT02088-0, KT00002-160953N, 1“ Tube Assemble

Answer to Question 2:

Using the suggested bend radius is OK provided the tube ends X, Y dimensions are maintained. The strait sections of the tube will be longer to compensate for the shorter bend radius. Vendor to submit details for NASA approval prior to manufacture.

Question 3:

Reference: __________________________________________________________

Question:

KT02088 calls for tubes for KT02088-5, KT02088-6, KT02088-7, KT02088-8, &

KT02088-9 to be fabricated per KT-0002. KT-0002, Flag Note 2A states Weld Butt-weld

Spuds per KSC-SPEC-Z-0008. KSC-SPEC-Z-0008, Page 11, paragraph 3.4.6 thru

3.4.8 states welds to be performed by automatic orbital welding (Fusion). The wall thickness for the above tubes are well outside of the range for automatic fusion welding.

These welds can be done using the manual GTAW process, and will be fully compliant with all requirements as called out in the SOW, page 8, Section 6.1. Is manual welding acceptable?

Answer to Question 3:

Manual welding is acceptable as long as the other requirements of the SOW and drawing are met. Tube with .134 wall and greater is at the limitation of standard automatic fusion welding.
