Sleeves or Slots Position cable sleeves or slots adjacent to the wall on which the backbone cables are to be sup-ported. Sleeves or slots must not obstruct wall terminating space. That is, they should not be directly above or below the wall space that is to be used for termination fields. Construct all:

The quantity should be altered as necessary according to specific project needs or structural limitations. They should also be coordinated with mechanical firestop systems.

Slots and sleeves to conform with the U.S. NFPA 70, National Electrical Code® (NEC®), and local fire codes.

Slots with a minimum 25 mm (1 in) high curb.

The cable management system shall meet or exceed the following applicable standards:

American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI)/American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) ASTM A123 - Zinc (Hot-Dip Galvanized) Coatings on Iron and Steel Products ASTM A510 - General Requirements for Wire Rods and Coarse Round Wire, Carbon Steel ASTM A569 - Steel, Carbon (0.15 Maximum, Percent), Hot-Rolled Sheet and Strip Commercial Quality ASTM A570 - Standard Specification for Steel, Sheet and Strip, Carbon, Hot- Rolled, Structural Quality ASTM A653/A653M - Standard Specification for Steel Sheet, Zinc-Coated (Galvanized) or Zinc-Iron Alloyed-Coated (Galvanized) by the Hot-Dip Process ASTM B633 - Electrodeposited Coatings of Zinc on Iron and Steel National Uniform Seismic Installation Guide (NUSIG)

Cable Management System Finishes Electroplated Zinc Galvanizing (Standard Stock Finish) - Electrodeposited zinc coating applied to an average thickness of 0.7 mils (18 microns) to 0.8 mils (20 microns). This surface treat-ment is suitable for most indoor applications and may be used outdoors in mild environments only.

Hot Dip Galvanizing - Provided by immersing the product in a molten zinc bath, this coating is applied to an average thickness of 2.4 mils (60 microns) to 3.2 mils (80 microns). This treat-ment is most suitable for outdoor applications or situations where increased corrosion resist-ance is desired.

Cable Management System Installation The cable management system shall be installed using hardware, splice connectors, support components and accessories furnished by manufacturer. All turns and "waterfalls" shall be of manufactured products. All cutting of the cable management system shall be preformed using manufacturer cutting techniques and cutting tools. All cable management systems must be accessible with a minimum of a 6 inch clearance from top and bottom of the tray. There shall not be a span of a distance of 6' or more that does not allow access to the cable tray.

Must be installed to meet:

National and local building codes.

In the United States, the NEC Article 392.

Cable Management System Sizing Cable Management Systems sizing shall be no smaller than the following sizes 4x18, 4x20, 4x24. The first number represents the depth of the cable tray and the second the width. Fill ratios shall not exceed 62% of any part of the system, be it tributary or trunk. This may require an increase in the sizing of the cable management system. Fill ratios are calculated by number of cables with "X" being the diameter of the cable being placed +40%. With this said, the final decision on depth and width and layout design reside with the CIT Project Manager, this is due to the considerations of fill capacity and future growth and changes in the industry.

It shall be used in specific locations as follows:

Approved installation instructions shall be present at each work area prior to the beginning of work and a test installation shall be produced for quality check by the Project Officer or his designated representative. The test installation shall be subject to inspection and/or test for conformance with contract requirements. Periodic quality checks shall be performed at the discretion of the Project Officer, and should installation prove to be substandard, all firestop-ping installed up to that time not meeting approved standards shall be replaced at no additional cost to the Government.

Area of work shall remain available for inspection by the Project Officer or his designated rep-resentative before and after application of firestopping.

Notification: Notify the Project Officer or his designated representative at least 24 hours prior to installation of firestopping in each area to allow opportunity for inspection.

A "Blue Light Phone" is placed to serve the NIH Community with a communications device in time of Emergency. It also has the capability to be used as a "Campus Only" telephone for basic contact and for information.

There are two types of "Blue Light Phone" that are placed at the NIH

A wall mounted Unit A pedestal, which can average in height between 61 inches to 114inches.

Pathways should conform to the CIT section on Horizontal Pathways

Wall mount units require a conduit pathway back to a central Telecommunications Closet or a communications management system, as well as a 120VAC (standard): 32 Watts Maximum electrical connection, these are providing by the GC. Excluding Pathways and an Electrical connection point Wall Mount units are generally installed by a CIT contractor

Pedestal Mounted phones require the same pathway and access to a 120VAC (standard): 32 Watts Maximum connect, but are usually placed by the GC due to the fact that they require concrete placement as well as mounting bolts for installation. Cabling for the Telecommunication connection is provided by the CIT Cabling Contractor.

The Parking Garages at MLP9 and MLP10 are a typical installation of a wall mount system.

Pedestals around Building 33 are a typical Pedestal Mount installation.

BAS, Utility Monitoring and Security Systems very widely in requirements for connections used to monitor their systems. They do however always need:

All Pathways are to be provided by the GC. Requirements for connections are to be provided by the GC, the NIH Customer and/or NIH Project Manager to CIT. CIT will provide the Cabling via an NIH Cabling Contractor to support these requirements and will assist on deter-mining cable types required to support the installation.

It is also important to remember that the CIT Network Group will be required to participate in this design process to ensure that the connections required can be supported. They can be con-tacted via the same method found in the TEL/LAN Closet Construction Requirements.

An EMT conduit pathway(s) back to a Telecommunications closet or closest cable management system The Pathway should never exceed 295 ft in length Pathways should conform to the CIT section on Horizontal Pathways.
