About this file

This document provides information about an Industry Day event for a Marine Corps Base Hawaii energy resilience initiative. The event overview and agenda outline that Marine Corps Base Hawaii relies solely on the commercial power grid for its energy needs, with transmission lines representing a single point of failure. The energy resilience project goals are to provide 17.5 megawatts of carbon-free, low-carbon backup generation for over 14 days during an extended grid outage, with "islanding" capability to integrate diverse energy sources into a microgrid that can interconnect with the local utility. Site tours were provided to industry representatives to inform their responses to an upcoming Request for Information solicitation from the Naval Facilities Engineering Command regarding energy resilience solutions for Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

• Transmission lines over the Koolau mountains provide power to the Windward side of Oahu (to include MCBH), representing a single point of failure for the electric power supply to MCBH and the east side of Oahu.

• Hawaii and mainland disasters highlight need for resilience and redundant power generation

Program Goals

• Carbon-free, low-carbon technology solutions

• Sustainment of 17.5MW load during extended outage (14+ days)

• “Islanding” capability

• Integration of energy sources into a microgrid

• Interconnection with HECO

• Potential support to community critical load
