RE: Type IL Cement
Dear Sir:
This letter is to inform you of a cement source change from the current Type I/II to a Type IL sourced cement from the same manufacturer. Type IL Portland Limestone Cement meets or exceeds the requirements of ASTM C595 and AASHTO M240. The use of this type is allowed in the following reference codes and specifications: Type IL cement is currently approved and used by the NCDOT, and SCDOT.
ACI 301-10 Specifications for Structural Concrete ACI 318-14 Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete ACI350.5-12 Specifications for Environmental Concrete Structures ASTM C94 Standard Specification for Ready Mixed Concrete
Type IL Cement is blended with up to 15% limestone and is formulated to exhibit equivalent performance as the current Titan I/II cement product, which facilitates its use as a one-to-one substitution rate. The use of Portland Limestone Cement is an essential way in which the construction industry can help reduce the global carbon footprint. All the cement sourced in the states of NC and SC will be Type IL by yearend 2022. Blanket approval will be necessary for construction projects to continue.
Please let us know if we can provide any additional information.
Kindest Regards, Jonathan W. Marsh Quality Control Manager

Type IL Portland Limestone Cement
Titan Type IL portland limestone cement from the Roanoke cement plant (Troutville, VA) is blended with up to 15% limestone. It is formulated to exhibit equivalent performance as Titan Type I/II cement, which facilitates its use as a one-to-one substitution for 100% of Type I/II cement. It is manufactured with the same materials, equipment, and quality control processes as Type I/II cement.
Approvals Titan portland limestone cement meets or exceeds ASTM C 595 for Type IL and AASHTO M240. The use of this cement type is allowed in the following reference codes and specifications:
ACI 301-10 Specifications for Structural
Concrete ACI 318-14 Building Code Requirements for
Structural Concrete ACI 350.5-12 Specifications for Environmental
Concrete Structures ASTM C94 Standard Specification for Ready
Mixed Concrete
These standards restrict the use of Type IL cement in S1, S2, and S3 exposure classes pending further research. Titan is conducting long-term testing for approval of Type IL in these exposures.
Ready Mix Concrete Use Titan requests that Type IL cement be allowed at equal substitution on all projects allowing use of Type I or Type II cement in S0 exposure class as defined in ACI 318-14, or equivalent exposure.

Test Results of Modified ASTM C1260, Potential Alkali Reactivity of Carolina Sunrock, Butner Quarry, #57 Coarse Aggregate Project:
AET Project No. P-0017749
Dear Mr. Hadden:
Attached are the referenced test results. You submitted one aggregate sample identified as “Carolina Sunrock, Butner Quarry, #57 Coarse Aggregate” which arrived at American Engineering Testing, Inc.
(AET) on October 24, 2022.
At your request, the submitted sample was used to fabricate and test three 1x1x11.25-in. mortar bar test specimens in accordance with modified ASTM C1260 – 21, “Standard Test Method for Potential Alkali Reactivity of Aggregates (Mortar-Bar Method).” The submitted aggregate sample was prepared by grading in accordance with Table 1 of ASTM C1260 and washed as required. A water-to-cementitious ratio of 0.47 was used to fabricate test specimens. As requested, the test method was modified by using a Type IL cement1 meeting the requirements of ASTM C595/C595M – 20, “Standard Specification for Blended Hydraulic Cements” and by extending the measurements through 28 days in 1N NaOH solution with a maximum allowable expansion of 0.08% at 28 days as stated in the project specification.
Immediately after casting, the test specimens were placed in a moist cabinet in their molds for 24 hours.
Initial measurements were taken after the specimens were removed from the molds. The specimens were placed in a container with sufficient tap water conditioned at 73.5 ± 3.5°F to totally immerse them.
Zero measurements were taken after 24 hours in water at 176 ºF. After the zero measurement, the specimens were placed in 1N NaOH solution at 176 ºF for the remainder of the testing.
The modified ASTM C1260 is in compliance with the 28-day minimum requirement of 0.08% maximum expansion as stated in the project specification.
The test specimens will be retained for a period of thirty days from the date of this report. Unless written instructions are received by that time, the remainder of the submitted sample and test specimens will be discarded. The test results represent specifically the sample tested and method specified.
1 Due to CO2 emissions control, industry experts predict ordinary portland cement will soon no longer be available. Cement producers have started converting their plants to produce portland limestone cement (PLC).

Test Results of Modified ASTM C1567, Potential Alkali-Silica Reactivity of Combinations of Cementitious Materials and Aggregate (Accelerated Mortar-Bar Method) Carolina Sunrock, Butner Quarry, Concrete Sand
AET Project No. P-0017749
Dear Mr. Hadden:
Attached are the referenced test results. You submitted the following materials which arrived at American
Cement Roanoke Type IL(13) Cement, Kamari Plant, Greece Two 5-gallon buckets
Fly Ash The SEFA Group Class F Fly Ash, HF Lee Station, Goldsboro, NC Two 5-gallon buckets
Fine Aggregate Carolina Sunrock, Butner Quarry, Concrete Sand Three 5-gallon buckets
At your request, the submitted materials were used to fabricate and test three 1x1x11.25-in. mortar bar test specimens in accordance with modified ASTM C1567 – 21, “Standard Test Method for Potential Alkali-Silica Reactivity of Combinations of Cementitious Materials and Aggregate (Accelerated Mortar- Bar Method).” The submitted aggregate sample was prepared by grading in accordance with Table 1 of ASTM C1567 and washed as required. The material proportions were provided by you. A water-to-cementitious ratio of 0.47 was used to fabricate test specimens. As requested, the test method was modified to extend the measurements through 28 days in 1N NaOH solution with a maximum allowable expansion of 0.08% at 28 days as stated in the project specification.
Zero measurements were taken after 24 hours in water at 80 ºC. After the zero measurement, the specimens were placed in 1N NaOH solution at 80 ºC for the remainder of the testing.
The modified ASTM C1567 is in compliance with the 28-day minimum requirement of 0.08% maximum expansion as stated in the project specification.

Guidelines for Use Dosage: MasterPolyheed 997 admixture has a recommended dosage range of 3-15 fl oz /cwt (195-980 mL/100 kg) of cementitious material for most concrete mixes.
As the dosage of MasterPolyheed 997 admixture increases to 15 fl oz/cwt (980 mL/100 kg) of cementitious materials, normal concrete setting characteristics are maintained and early and ultimate compressive strengths increase.
BASF does not recommend the use of dosages outside the recommended range without trial testing. Consult your local sales representative for assistance in determining the dosage for optimum performance.
Product Notes Corrosivity – Non-Chloride, Non-Corrosive: MasterPolyheed 997 admixture will neither initiate nor promote corrosion of reinforcing or prestressing steel embedded in concrete, or of galvanized steel floor and roof systems. MasterPolyheed 997 admixture does not contain intentionally added calcium chloride or other chloride-based ingredients.
Compatibility: MasterPolyheed 997 admixture may be used in combination with any BASF…
