N/A S-502 Detail B1
Will Rock Removal be required for the construction of the new DD2 East Crane Rail Foundations to accommodate the 4 foot minimum footing depth as shown in detail B1 on S-502?
The Borings indicate that Rock is 5 feet below finished grade.
Details B1 needs to be founded in competant rock. A minimum of 3'- 0" will be required. The drawing will be adjusted.

5 3/13/2020 Tunnel Drawings
N/A S-500, S-
In Section B1/S-500 there is a note referring to Detail D1 and D2 on S-504. D1 is an applicable detail for butt splice joints of the tunnel plates. D2 appears to be for a different location in the structure (ie, not for anything is Section B1/S-500). We assume it is for the walls of the stair wells where the secondary liner concrete/plate is 2” thick overall. Please confirm D2 is for stair well walls as there is no direct reference to it
The purpose of this reference is to show the stainless steel liner. The reference will be removed.
6 3/13/2020 Tunnel Drawings
N/A S-504 Detail D2/S-504 indicates use of a WT4x6.5(stem trimmed) for locations where liner concrete/plate is 2” thick. Detail D1/S- 504 refers to Note 2 on that drawing which seems to be describing what is required in Detail D2. Note 2 refers to use of a WT2x6.5(stem trimmed). Please clarify that Note 2 is intended for Detail D2 and clarify the size WT that is required for Detail D2
Note 2 is intended for Detail D2; member is WT 4x6.5 not WT2x6.5.
Detail D2 is for Swest Stairwell location where liner is placed against existing utility tunnel wall.
7 3/13/2020 Tunnel Drawings
N/A S-504 The concrete anchor connection shown in Detail D2/S-504 would require a wall liner plate weld joint at every WT, ie, 2 feet O.C. (assuming the intention is to anchor all WTs to concrete).
Access hole is acceptable, Plug weld must prevent water intrusion into the space.
To avoid unnecessary weld seams and continue the liner plate across WTs, confirm that it is acceptable to provide an access hole (approx. 7/8” dia.) in the liner plate opposite each anchor to allow anchor installation and plug weld the hole, prior to liner concrete placement.
8 3/13/2020 Tunnel Drawings
N/A S-501, S-
Please confirm that concrete placement behind wall liner panels in stair wells is to be self-consolidating concrete.
Self consolidating concrete is correct.
9 3/13/2020 Tunnel Drawings
N/A S-504 There is no weld detail provided for the SS liner plate inside corner joints in the main tunnel and the stair wells. Please confirm that a 3/16” fillet weld is acceptable (similar to what is shown in Detail A1/S-504).
3/16" weld is acceptable at inside corner as stated.
10 3/13/2020 Tunnel Drawings
N/A S-501 Detail C5/S-501 indicates a square groove weld where liner plate splices on a WT (which are located 2 feet O.C.). Since liner plates should be made as large as possible (minimizing weld seams), they will span across most of these WTs. Please confirm it is acceptable to use a 3/4" diameter plug weld at 2 feet OC where the liner plates span across WT stiffeners. If not acceptable, please advise what connection is required.
Detail C5/S501 is shown incorrect please see revised drawing. WT acts as scantling. Liner should be prefabricated and instsalled as an assembly. Multiple WT's should be fitted to a single plate. Plug welds are not permitted.
11 3/13/2020 Tunnel Drawings
N/A S-501 For the Rock Anchors shown on Section C1/S-501, please provide tensioning or torqueing requirements.
Use same procedure / practice as used for snug tightened steel-to-steel bolted connections. The snug tightened condition is the tightness that is attained with a few impacts of an impact wrench or the full effort of an ironworker using an ordinary spud wrench to bring the plies into firm contact.
12 3/13/2020 Tunnel Drawings
N/A S-504 Referring to D3/S-504, please confirm that a continuous 3/16 inch fillet weld is acceptable for connection of stair tread/risers to liner plate and to each other.
Cotinuous 3/16" fillet weld is acceptable
13 3/13/2020 Tunnel Drawings
N/A S-503, S-
Detail A1/S-503 indicates 2 plates on top of the beam. The upper plate is called out to be 3/4" thick.
The lower plate is noted to be IAW A3/S-506, which also indicates 3/4" thick.
The 2 plates appear to be different thicknesses. Please confirm thickness width and length of both plates.
Both plates are 3/4" wt.
The upper base plate is shown on detail A3 /506 across the tunnel. The lower plate extends 1/2" past the web of the beam to allow for welding.
The flange is 11.25" +2* (1/2")= 12.25"
