About this file

This is a technical engineering drawing specification for a large steel battery container (SBDC) manufactured for Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. The drawing (RF-2202, Document 2370A000388, Revision A) details a welded steel container measuring approximately 25.25 x 22.25 x 49.625 inches with a capacity of 750 lbs, fabricated from ASTM A36 steel. The container assembly comprises 11 components including a base, wide and narrow walls, flange, top, lift lugs, security tabs, gasket, washers, and closure bolts.

The specification establishes comprehensive manufacturing, welding, inspection, and testing requirements. All sharp edges must be chamfered to a minimum 0.03 inches, and all surfaces require 125 RA or better finish unless otherwise specified. Welding must be performed by qualified welders with minimum 45-degree bevel angles on all bevel welds, followed by visual inspection and magnetic particle testing (MT) per MIL-STD-2035 acceptance criteria. The container requires two critical load tests: a safety hoist ring proof test using a 1/2-13 UNC-2B threaded hole capable of supporting 2,500 lbs working load, and a lifting lug load test using vertical tension loads up to 11,375 lbs (150% load test) and 11,950 lbs (155% load test). All exposed surfaces must be painted with two coats of Amercoat 235 paint conforming to MIL-PRF-23236 after abrasive blasting to near white metal. Upon completion of all testing, the container must be permanently marked with proof test information, SPS capacity of 750 lbs, unloaded weight, maximum loaded weight of 6,000 lbs, and a unique serial number matching its corresponding lid.
