REQUEST FOR SPECIFICATION CLARIFICATION
RFC 016
NAME OF CONTRACTOR: Mare Island Dry Dock, LLC
SPECIFICATION ITEM NO.: 107
PARAGRAPH / SECTION NO: 1.1, 2.1.1, 6.1, 7.1.1, 7.1.2 a, b, c, f
TITLE: AFFF SPRINKLER PIPING REPLACEMENT
QUESTION:
1.1 This item describes replacing all existing main deck carbon steel AFFF piping and fittings (2 ½” and below) and internal cleaning of piping above 2 ½” (frame 31-51).
* We recently received 2.1.1 MSC Drawing # 555-6580704 Foam System Diagram and noted the material in this Diagram is CUNI and not carbon steel as stated in 1.1.
Is there an actual DWG for this item with a material list that shows the sprinkler connections also?
Is it the Government’s intent to replace steel with Code 6 CUNI?
6.1 Install all piping in accordance with 2.1 and the applicable rules and regulations of the USCG and ABS?
7.1.1 Mechanically disconnect, remove and clean to bright metal all sprinkler heads affected by this work item using Reference 2.1 sheets 3 and 4 as guidance.
Sprinkler heads shall not be blasted in the cleaning process. Retain the sprinkler heads for reinstallation in 7.3.2.b below.
* There is no 7.3.2 in this specification.
7.1.2 a. Install new AFFF piping (2 ½” and below), valves and associated fittings templating from the existing configuration and locations, using Reference 2.1 as guidance.
* 2.1 is CUNI and existing is carbon steel
Is it the Government’s intent to replace steel with Code 6 CUNI?

7.1.2 b. Install sprinkler heads removed in 7.3.1.a above, using Reference 2.1 sheets 3 and 4 as guidance. Connect sprinkler head to the system using ½” couplings retained from original installation.
There is no 7.3.1 above 7.1.2. The Diagram shows Code 6 CUNI and existing material is carbon steel. Spec states to reuse couplings retained from original installation.
Are the original couplings steel and put into a CUNI system?
7.1.2 c. Replace with new orifices FF-OR002 and FF-OR003 in 2.1, one each with the following openings: 3 ¾” and 3 7/8”.
Pipe replacement in this item is 2 ½ ‘and below. Are these orifices’ correct?
7.1.2 f. New piping returned to the ship shall be blasted and primed prior to installation.
Does the Government want the CUNI Piping blasted and primed prior to installation?
