About this file
This document is a response from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) to questions regarding a Request for Information (RFI) for new and upgraded beamlines for the Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U) project.
The key details are:
- The scope includes vacuum chambers and slits, with vacuum hardware such as fasteners, gaskets, pumps, and gauges to be provided.
- Granite stands are in scope for the pink beam slits but not the white beam slits.
- Krytox grease is not acceptable, and mechanics outside the vacuum chamber are an acceptable solution.
- The delivery cannot extend into the protrusion zone, but other directions are permitted even if they exceed the measurements in the drawings.
- The related federal contract opportunity is a solicitation (RFP No. MG 05102024) for the ALS-U Accumulator Ring to Storage Ring (ATS)/ Storage Ring to Accumulator Ring (STA) Base Supports & Rafts, with a proposal due date of 06/07/2024.

LBNL Response to Questions 01 Re: LBNL RFI ALS-U NEW AND UPGRADED
BEAMLINES – 05/15/2024
1. The scope of work says vacuum chambers, but I think this is a typo, right?
It should be the three slits including their enclosing vacuum chambers I believe ")
LBNL Response: The vacuum chambers with indicated ports, and the slits, are included in the scope of supply.
2. In table 8, the granite stands are mentioned, but in one of the drawings it says that these are not included in the scope. Should we include those in our offer?
LBNL Response: Granite stands are in the scope of supply for the pink beam slits. Granite stands are not in the scope of supply for the white beam slits.
3. Similarly, it’s not completely clear to me if you expect us to quote the vacuum parts listed in Table 9, or only accommodate the ports? If the vacuum part needs to be included I believe the budget will not be sufficient, but I haven’t completed the calculations yet.
LBNL Response: Vacuum hardware (fasteners, gaskets, pumps, cold cathode gauges, burst disk, blank-off flange for shipping) is in the scope of supply.
4. Is it allowed to use Krytox? As a standard, our pink beam slits use this UHV grease, our white beam slits on the other hand have the mechanics outside of the vacuum chamber. We can do either way depending on what is preferred.
LBNL Response: Krytox is not acceptable for these systems. Mechanics outside the vacuum chamber are an acceptable solution.
5. Is it correctly interpreted that in your coordinate system in the drawings, T is the beam direction? And that the delivery cannot extend into the protrusion zone (but other directions are permitted even though they exceed the measurements in the drawings?)
LBNL Response: Yes, T is beam direction. Chambers should not extend into the protrusion zone. Only actuators, gauges, and lenses/cameras can extend into these zones.
