1. INTRODUCTION

This Engineering document describes methods for Part Marking of objects utilized by LBNL external or internal, projects, experiments, research, scientific equipment, or other as described by either/or 3-D models or drawings. This document works in concert with EG-1000-0824 and EG-1000-0923. The General Notes associated with either/or 3-D model and drawings will reference this document.

2. SCOPE

This Engineering document covers all Engineering Drawing Standards and gives recommendations for the principles of part marking to be applied to objects described by Engineering Drawings created at or for Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

This Part Marking Standard applies to any part regardless of material or size, as long as this document is referenced within the notes for the object. The note for the object will specify the size and location for the part marking. This document is meant to describe how to mark the part, whether the marking is engraved, stamped, inked, scribed, labeled, or other method. This document is not meant to specify where and what specific size, but does provide limits of size.

Unless specified otherwise the guidelines set forth in this document are based on the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME) Standards so they can be interpreted and understood universally. See Definitions for complete list of Standards.

3. PERMANENT MARKING

Permanent Marking uses a process which will ensure identification during the normal service life of the item. Methods of permanent marking are;

Permanent Marking Methods

Shall not affect the function or serviceability of the item. Depth of all markings to be specified within the note as appropriate for the marking method.

Integral – Characters produced by forcible stamping, forging, or molding into the item

Metal Stamp – Characters are produced by forcible displacement of material.

Hammer – Characters are produced individually or in groups by impact force applied mechanically or by hand.

Press – Characters are produced individually or in groups with a controlled force applied without impact.

Roll – Characters are produced by a rotating motion of either the item or the tool, or both, when in contact with each other under a controlled force.

Vibro Peen – Characters are produced by a hand guided or mechanically rapidly vibrating tool having a pointed tip, or multiple tips, making indentations on the item to produce characters.

Dot-Peening – Characters are produced by a mechanically guided rapidly vibrating tool having a pointed tip. Multiple tipped tools may produce one or more characters simultaneously.

4. PART MARKING APPLICATION

General The actual application of the method is to be described in the note for the object. In this note there needs to be information about what size the characters should be and what is the depth of the marking method. The size of the characters should be commensurate with the object size. The placement of the marking should be indicated either within the drawing or other suitable method. If there is no specific direction provided to indicate where to mark, then the marking should be placed in such a location that can be seen easily and readily. The part marking should not interfere with the functioning of the object. The location of the marking should not be on any surface that there is a designed, intended motion or contact between other objects.

Marking Fonts for Characters The font to be used for marking should be of a block type characteristic. The fonts which are in the style of cursive are not recommended.

The specific font to be used is dependent upon the method to be used and tool used for marking. It is recommended to check with the fabricator/vendor that will be performing the marking to determine the font.

Recommended block style fonts to use;

Font 1: Arial i.e. AL-1234-5678 is a preferred standard block format.

Font 2: Arial Black i.e. AL-1234-5678 is a preferred standard block format.

Font 3: Century Gothic i.e. AL-1234-5678 is a preferred standard block format.

Font 4: Calibri Light i.e. AL-1234-5678 is a preferred standard block format.

Font 5: Corbel Light i.e. AL-1234-5678 is a preferred standard block format.

When labels are used as a marking method and use1-D and 2-D digital codes (i.e. Barcode or QR code) the fonts used along with the codes should still consider the above list of preferred fonts, but they are not limited to using these fonts.

Placing the marking location in the model When desired the location of the place for the part marking can be shown as a 2-D or 3-D feature in the model. There are three best practice methods for accomplishing this, and they are;

NOTE: The part marking location and feature does not have to be shown in the model, unless the fabrication technique to be used is by Model Based Manufacturing, in which case it must be Method 3 as described below.

4.3.1.On a surface of the model place a sketch feature. The sketch feature will be a box, a rectangle, described by the desired height and length of the part marking. The rectangle box feature will conform to section 3.1.4 of AS478, including the hash marking (see Figure 4.1). The location of the feature can be completely described with distance and tolerance from any desired feature in the model. The location of the rectangular box can also be shown in an approximate position, where a more exact location is not as critical or needed.

4.3.2. On a surface of the model place a sketch feature of the type text. The sketch feature will be a text box, a rectangle, and will include the exact characters desired for the part marking (See Figure 4-2). The rectangle box feature will conform to section 3.1.2 of AS478, including the character marking. The location of the feature can be completely described with distance and tolerance from any desired feature in the model. The location of the rectangular box can also be shown in an approximate position, where a more exact location is not as critical or needed.

Figure 4-2

4.3.3. On a surface of the model place a 3-D feature extrude into the surface of the model. The 3-D feature will be the exact character example of what is desired with the height and length of the part marking. The location of the feature can be completely described with distance and tolerance from any desired feature in the model. The location of the feature can also be shown in an approximate position, where a more exact location is not as critical or needed.

Part Marking shown on the Drawing When ever there is a drawing created to describe a part, then the method for showing the part marking (if part marking is needed) can be accomplished using three best practice methods, and they are;

4.4.1. In a view of the drawing either place or show the sketch feature. The sketch feature will be a box, a rectangle, described by the desired height and length of the part marking. The rectangle box feature will conform to section 3.1.4 of AS478, including the hash marking (see Figure 4.1). The location of the feature can be completely described with distance and tolerance from any desired feature in the drawing view. The location of the rectangular box can also be shown in an approximate position, where a more exact location is not as critical or needed. The box and its meaning are described by using a flag note pointed to(attached) the rectangular box.

See Section 5 for the contents of the note.

4.4.2. In a view of the drawing either place or show the sketch feature of the type text. The box and its meaning are described by using a flag note pointed to(attached) the rectangular box. See Section 5 for the contents of the note.

4.4.3 In a view of the drawing a 3-D feature can be described and clearly identified. The 3-D feature will be the exact character example of what is desired with the height and length of the part marking. The location of the feature can be completely described with distance and tolerance from any desired feature in the model. The location of the feature can also be shown in an approximate position, where a more exact location is not as critical or needed. The 3-Dfeature and its meaning are described by using a flag note pointed to(attached) the feature in the view. See Section 5 for the contents of the note.

5. PART MARKING NOTE EXAMPLE (within the model)

The note to use for the marking of the part needs to specify what method to use for making the mark, the depth of the marking, the characters to mark (specific number which can include Serial Number and Revision), the font of the characters and any other pertinent information. There are standard notes and the appropriate note format should be chosen from the Library and then the specific variables need to be applied in the note.

NOTE: The General Notes within the Model Annotations is where the Part Marking Note is contained.
