LBNL Response to Questions 02 Re: LBNL RFP MG-05102024 – 05/29/2024

1. Part AL-1506-9923 is used as an example.

On part number AL-1506-9923 find number 15 and 16, there is a M20x2.5 thru find number 15 and 16 only. There are critical dimensions called out to datum C.

If this part is machined first and then welded on, meeting the +-1mm is going to be very difficult. If it is welded on and then machined, what is the minimum depth for this tapped feature if breaking through is undesirable? What are the critical elements of this feature? Is there is a preferred manufacturing order.?

LBNL Response: The 20 mm strut bosses are intended to be machined prior to welding and designed for full thread engagement, no bottom tap. The thread length is prioritized over location.

The boss dimensions are required to be reported in the pre-paint/powder coating inspection report, any nonconformances will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
