About this file

This document is a Request for Proposals (RFP) for Robotic Welding Systems to be used in the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) at Brookhaven National Lab. The RFP outlines technical requirements for two robotic welding systems, including the need for hybrid robotic and manual MIG welding capabilities, specific weld joint requirements, and the potential for 100% robotic welding. The RFP also addresses questions and answers related to weld quality inspection, proposal submission deadlines, and seam finding/tracking technology. The RFP was issued by the Department of Energy Office of Science, with a solicitation number of MB447563. The original proposal due date was 11/11, but has been extended to 11/25.

RFP 447563 – Robotic Welding System Questions & Answers

1. Does BNL intend to conduct any nondestructive evaluation on the weld quality after the welds are made? If so, what type of inspection do you plan to conduct?

BNL Response: Plans have not yet been developed for nondestructive evaluation of welds.

2. Would it be helpful if the delivered systems include weld quality inspection, even if the inspection is conducted after a weld cooling off time?

BNL Response: This could be helpful but not a requirement.

3. We are working on completing the RFP response. However, we realized that we need additional time to complete a high-quality proposal.

Hence, we may need additional time (at this time, we will need about 10 business days to complete the proposal). Is there a chance that the proposal will get extended?

or under some special case, can we submit the proposal by 11/25 please (an extension of just 10 days).

Ok to issue an extension to 11/25

4. Do you know if similar opportunities may be available in case we are unable to submit the proposal due to shortage of time to meet the 11/11 deadline.

BNL Response: N/A. We have extended the solicitation due date to 11/25.

5. The SOW calls for a hybrid robotic and manual MIG welding system – is there a requirement to how much of the content needs to be robotically welded?

The manual portion is for tacking and setup purposes. The weld must be completed fully by the robot after setup is complete.

6. 50% of the circumferential joint can be robotic welded. The bottom half to be performed manually is also the most strenuous (3-4-5G welding orientations).

Initial market research leads us to believe that 100% of the circumferential joint has the potential to be robotically welded.

7. Of the two linear welds one cannot be welded robotically. The upper joint requires further investigation and could be partially robotic welded.

Initial market research leads us to believe that both of the linear welds have the potential to be robotically welded.

8. The end finishing joints will require a manual weld operation.

Initial market research leads us to believe that the end finishing joints have the potential to be robotically welded.

9. Equipment requirement for seam finding and seam tracking technology – has the customer tested any of their parts or environment with any specific product?

We have not, but Initial market research leads us to believe that this capability is possible.

10. Is the intention to have a welding system on the inside of the tube loop and one system on the outside of the loop?

That is a likely approach based on initial market research but not required.
